I am curious to know if there are any documented 1970 Kansas built cars that had the VIN the same size as the engine code....

are you talking about the deck numbers? my 70SS is a kansas car but doesn`t have the original motor.

None that I am aware of.

Shouldn't happen as they were stamped at two different plants at different times. Tonawanda when the engine was built and Kansas City when it was installed in the particular car.

And didn't they stamp the VIN upside down or something odd like that?

Don't know about stamping #'s upside down , have a 67 396 engine from a kansas city car & they are right side up , also my 70 ss has the # 's down by the oil filter so that is no help . But kansas city cars did have a larger set of stamps compared to other plants, not as big as the tonawanda stamps though .

Thanks, I am talking about the deck of the block, my fault. I was wondering if it was possible that the VIN gang holder could have been broken for a period of time, because the tranny is date coded to the car as well as the engine, and has the same large stamp as what is on the block.(for the VIN)Ironic that the VIN is stamped backward on the block...But like Rick Nelson said, I have never seen one like this. If it is restamped, they spent some time duplicating the broach marks on the block, because the block does not looked decked. car was built in April, first week. Thanks for your replies!

Per one of our resident experts on this board who helped me when (actually after) I bought my 70SS, many of the Kansas 70SS cars that he has documented in the past have the stamp upside down and also a unique font. My 70SS stamp is very light and hard to read and has the appearance of a double stamp from the gang holder moving during the process and is stamped upside down. Although he could not definitely confirm the authenticity from the pictures I sent him of the stamping, he indicated that it appeared to be legit.

Hey Robert . Just to confirm your findings, mine also is a very light stamping & doubled up but is down by oil filter . Had to wipe paint off block just to see it . Mine is a early build car , 9/69 , possibly training day for new installers ? When was your's built ?

Unfortunately the car is in storage about 50 miles from my house and I don't have readily access to it and I don't have all that information written down any where. I have a poor picture of the stamp available and unfortunately on the Tonawanada stamp which would give an indication of the date the engine was built the most important number (second) in the sequence T0*28CTX is obscured in the photo. If I make a trip out where the car is I can get the build date of the trim tag. If my memory serves me right the casting date code on the back of the motor indicated it was built in 1970 so if it is a matching numbers motor (and at this point I still think it is) the block was cast after December 1969 and so it would not have made it a real early built car. I need to get my head down by the oil filter one of these days and see if I have that stamping on my motor. My buddy's 70 SS car has that stamping and was what we used to document his car becasue his block was decked and the VIN numbers were gone. Don't remember where his car was built though. For anyone that has used those gang stamps it is not surprising to me that they could appear double stamped occasionally. After all it was a manual operation.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful
