Welcome to Team Chevelle. The coil will still be powered. Because of the resistance wire it won't be a full 12 volts. The wire to the starter supplies a full 12 volt while cranking for a little extra kick.

Posting in the Electrical & Wiring (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27 ) section should get you more responses.

That bypass wire is only needed IF you still have the original points type ignition system.
IF it is needed, you need to connect it to the purple wire BUT a diode should be installed in series to stop feed back current.

12 volt power will feed from the purple wire on the "S" terminal back to the coil's + terminal during cranking but can't feed back from the coil's + terminal to the "S" terminal during "run" with a diode in series.
