I can not find my title. The bad thing is the car was titled in N.C. and now the car is in IN. Neither state is being helpful. To make matters worse, I am stationed in Germany. What are my options? Thanks in advance.

In my state, you just apply for a dulplicate title, you must have friends still in NC, ask if you can use their address. You'll most likely have to wait til you get back to CONUS.

I tried the duplicate title thing. The car has been off their radar to long.

"The car has been off their radar for too long."...???

Mr. Duude,

If you title your car with the North Carolina DMV, they don't just do away with your records after a few years.
The record of your car being titled remains at the DMV in Raleigh.

You simply apply to them (http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_services/registrationtitling/titleDuplicate.html) for a duplicate title and pay the associated $15 fee.

I have a 78 Trans Am that fell off the radar in California probably 20 yrs ago.It was never registered to me and I long ago lost the title to it.I needed to move it and believe it or not in the Peoples Republic of California, all I had to do was pay the current registration amount, get a smog check and insurance.I elected to have it moved on a Flatbed as its still a long way from a driver and I got a deal. All I needed to show them was the Vin.I cant see it being that hard in other states.

It's still on their radar. If it's been un-licensed long enough they might need to actually work a little bit to find it . Remember, they are government employees. Try talking to a manager.

I talked to N.C. DMV today and guess what? MR. Bever, we can find no details on your car. Please bring the car to the DMV office and than "maybe" we can help you. I am going to see what broadway title can do for me.

I can believe you got that response from the NCDMV. Do you happen to have a title number somewhere on something like and old registration card? Did you call Raleigh or one of the local tag shops? Try to call a DMV inspector, they are usually available between 8-10 AM at a Highway Patrol station. Don't give up so easy, NC is a bear to deal with but there is a record of your car somewhere.

My 69 was unregistered for 15 years. The previous owner did have the title and it was no problem getting it in my name. It should have fallen off of the radar too but didn't because she had the piece of paper. There is a record somewhere.

I taked to the Raleigh DMV office. The last woman that I talked to said that "I can see where the property taxes were paid but I don't see your title info." I have the title # and the plate # that where last on the car. I was also told to bring the car to DMV and they would to a vin # rubbing and then they would issue a duplicate title.

Sounds to me like your problem is solved Mr. Duude.

Call an Inspector, what they want to do is to make sure you aren't trying to get a title for a vin where the car does not exist anymore. Since the car is out of state that is a bigger problem.

Can the County where you paid your taxes help with any records needed? What County was it? A member on TC may live there and know someone that can help. Don't give up, you can win this, the State is full of corruption.

This is in Wake county.

I stand corrected.I find it hard to believe that something is easier in California.

Wake County, that explains it.

Try contacting a smaller county like Chatham or Alamance and see what the inspector says.

Why does this guy continue to need advice on this topic?
The DMV has told him what to do.
He doesn't need any more advice, he just needs to follow through with what the DMV has told him to do, and it sounds to me like his problem is solved.

I am so glad you got it figured out. The DMV in NC is a pain in the #@$ to deal with. With all of the new laws involving cars over 35 years old it has really gotten worse.

Thank you for your service to our country.

good to see it worked out. You should also request the history on your car. The NC DMV has a form, don't remember the number off the top of my head, that will allow you to get the complete history, in NC , for your car. You just have to sign the back that you will not contact anyone listed and let them know you are restoring it and would like the history. It cost me a dollar and I got everything about mine from the first title, although I already knew the contacts from my own research. With the new laws it is harder but you can find info out there and it is possible to get it. take it easy, Andy
