The following is my cowl tag info:

09B
ST 67-13817 ATL 2245
TR 763-A RR
2LG
4K 5Y

The thing I find odd is that I thought the -A after the 763 meant a bench seat. But I thought the 763 was only available with bucket seats and 2LG was for a 4-speed with console. Could I be decoding this wrong?

The 763 trim code is for black buckets (761 is black bench) and the 763 should have a -B (buckets) not the -A (bench) for an Atlanta car.

I'd be suspect of a couple of things about the tag.

1. Atlanta separated the lower and upper paint codes with a dash (-) ~ should read R-R (unless you just didn't include the dash character in the post).
2. The body date of 09B, September 2nd week of 1966, shows a body number way too high for that early a production. I have a few Atlanta 13817 tags from September and they read:
09A has body number 0074
09C has body number 0721
09D has body number 1742
Body numbers generally were consecutive for a particular model/series.

Just out of curiosity, are the last 4 numbers of the VIN less than 109860?

Does the tag look like a reproduction? The "K" in group 4 is suppose to indicate a 375 L78 engine as well. Would you mind sending me a photo of the tag to add to my 67 portion of my Chevellestuff.com website?

Dale,

Thanks for the reply. I suspect this might be a reproduction tag. It indeed does not have the dash between the RR and the body number does seem to be to high. The other thing I should have seen as a red light was that one of the rivots is missing from the cowl tag. The last 4 numbers of the VIN are less then 109860 though. It is in the 1079** range. I purchased the car a couple weeks ago as a SS. Now I got to really wonder if it really is a SS.

Does the VIN plate (on the A-pillar) say it's a 138177Annnnnn car? Fisher Body plates are not the final disposition of a SS car, although for 64-68 they're a good indication, but rather the VIN is the final answer. I don't know of any state that mandates the body tag, but you don't mess with the VIN plate - that's illegal.

There are a couple of other places you can check for a VIN. Probably the most accessible now would be the trunk lip on the right side towards the top corner, maybe just under the weatherstripping if the quarter panel hasn't been replaced.

Partial VIN# on quarter panel is not reliable...in my experience.

There is another K code for group 4 indicating a "dome reading lamp" but no years are listed. The sheet also covered other Chevrolet models including Corvair, full-size, etc. and I deleted all that were obviously not Chevelles (like RS/SS options). Whether it's true or not...? You'd have to find a REAL L78 car from Atlanta, Framingham, or KC as those were the only plants to code the body tag as such.

FWIW, "M" in group 4 in 1965 indicated a Z16. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
