: 65 ss
ramrod Dec 26th, 04, 10:10 PM I have a 65 ss chevelle convertable that I am getting ready to work on. As far as I can tell this is a SS, with AC, power steering, power top, the engine is a 327. what I am trying to find out is if this was a automatic or standard trans vechicle. how can I find that info out? any help would be great!
thanks
WayneK Dec 27th, 04, 11:58 AM An SS in 65 came with bucket seats and consoles.
If it were a stick car ( this could have been added afterwards ) Look for the bushings in the steering column support bracket for a clutch pedal.
The hole in the fire wall for the clutch pedal rod, The welded on frame bracket for the clutch Z bracket. and different hole in floor if the floor has not been hacked on ?
I am sure there are otheres?
ramrod Dec 27th, 04, 1:30 PM I beleive it to be a car that was orginally a stick. I was wondering if there was some way of this being confirmed by the vin or tag on the fire wall. the car does have bucket seats and a center consel.
thanks again
Bill Pritchard Dec 27th, 04, 1:45 PM Can't tell from VIN or Trim Tag if car was stick or automatic. Wayne has provided some good things to look for clues.
Rich-L79 Dec 27th, 04, 6:38 PM Some cowl tags will have a code for an M20 (4-speed) or a Powerglide. No code was used for the 3-speed manual as it was standard equipment. Some cowl tags (such as Baltimore cars) have no such information.
Later tonight I'll post a follow up as to what the codes are and where on the tag they can be found (I'm at work right now).
I'm requesting the Admins to move this thread to Tag Team as well.
Where was your car built? Can you provide us with all the data on the tag on the upper driver's side corner of the firewall?
65Camino Dec 27th, 04, 7:53 PM Rich, I sent you an email a few days ago to your address of richnat@concentric.net. I don't knoew if you received it or not. Not kick back message at this end. If you don't check this address often I will discontinual contine to use it. I also sent three pictures of a metal strap I took off my frrst 65 El Camino (now scraped). It either ran under the gas tank or over the top and was bolted to the sides of the frame. it also had two rubber bumpers. Can you verfy which way this strap was to be mounted. No picture in the assmbly manual and no holes in frame on my present car. Both cars are Kansas City built.

Rich-L79 Dec 27th, 04, 11:30 PM Rudy,
Too bad it's not a Kansas City car, they better cowl tags! This one seems to tell us it had deluxe seat belts and a convertible top (already knew about the top I guess) but not much else. Fremont, Detroit and Baltimore tags aren't often much help.
It does tell us it had a black bucket seat interior, a Crocus Yellow exterior and I think a black convertible top. The model number says it is a Malibu SS with a V8. That's about all I can decode, perhaps if someone has more info on Fremont tags they can shed some more light.
Roy,
I got some e-mails tonight which are downloading. I get an incredible amount of spam and my spam blocker is set to high and it sometimes catches good stuff too. The best way to e-mail me is to do it through the e-mail service through this web site, those always get through. I'll try my best to respond to your e-mail as soon as it finishes downloading.
DaleM Dec 28th, 04, 1:20 AM Rich is right about Fremont...didn't include a lot of info on the tag. I'm curious about the "U" after the paint/top colors listed as YY A. I have a tag for a Fremont 3A body date 13867 SS convertible and it doesn't have this extra letter.
Any chance of getting a photo of the tag - like those I have at http://www.chevellestuff.com/65velle/65_trim_tags-bf.htm? Be nice to add to the collection. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
