Hey guys, just a quick question. What are the bleeders up on the master cylinder for, and are they a necessary thing? For all i've ever done you bleed the brakes down at the wheels. Do they accomplish something special? I am going to replace my leaky master cylinder that has bleeders with one that possibly does not have bleeders.
Just wanted to make I'm not replacing something incorrectly. thanks!

Danial,
Just from my limited experience you shouldn't have much of a problem without bleeders. When you add fluid to a new dry master cylinder you'll have to displace the air in the cylinder in front of the piston or bleed the cylinder. New cylinders usually have plastic fittings with tubes that you install into the brake line outputs that will allow you to dump or purge back into the top tanks. When this is accomplished you need to reinstall the brake lines. This is where air can get back into the system. Your old bleeders come in handy at this point to get rid of that air. The good news is that the bubble likes to go up and find its way back to the tank with a few quick pumps (with the cover back on).

Do not turn in your old bleeder master for core. Many people on this site might want it.

Exactly. Those master cylinders are more desirable then just getting a core charge back.

Anyone know how to rebuild one with the bleeders? Who does it or where can you buy a rebuild kit? I'd like to keep my original off my 69.

I havent tried it in many years. Probably over 15 plus years. But I used a brake hone to freshen up the inside surface using a regular electric drill. Cleaned it out real well and installed the new parts in the kit.
However, Brake and Equipment warehouse in Minneapolis also does this service as well as sleeving it incase its needed.
