I am tearing down a 454 block which has never been apart before. It has a tag on the valve cover that said it was manufactured in November of 1973. It is a 2 bolt with the 781 heads. On the front pad is CE46I964. Does this tell me anything I don't already know about this engine?

CE46I964 is service part

CE - Chevrolet Engine
4 - Built for 1974 model year parts but could apply to prior years also. Every year they built replacement engines and parts to service that years models, this is what you have.
61964 - Tonawanda serial number, they used sequence from 49999 up to 79999

Nothing in this will tell you anything about the engine. CE is a generic service part used for applications per the parts guide. There is no wat to know today, thats just the way is with service parts.

66 ss. I did not bother looking for a casting date. I knew this motor had never been apart and it had the date of manufacture as november of 73 on a black and gold foil type tag on the valve cover.
