I'm wondering if someone can tell me how to decode three letters like EKH at the end of a engine #.Most I thought ended with two letters. And also are the sequence numbers on the cowl tag suppose to match the vin numbers? Thanks!!

Motor is a 396 325HP with p.glide. H at the end of the code stands for Holley Carb.

As Mike noted, the "H" indicated a Holley carb in earlier years. When the 396 became a 402, the engine ID suffix grew from 2 letter to 3 as well.

No, the body number is a Fisher Body unit number and has nothing to do with the VIN. Body numbers are assigned well before the car is in final assembly. Body numbers were usually assigned sequentially by body style; meaning that a Malibu coupe (13617/37) and a Malibu convertible (13667) may be built one after the other on the assembly line but the body numbers would not be sequential since they are two different models. In fact, a convertible built a month or two after a coupe may have a lower body number since more coupes were built than convertibles. I have numerous examples of this (as well as engine/paint/interior/body tag/etc codes on my Chevellestuff.com (http://www.chevellestuff.com) web site. Barring a body being pulled or held from Fisher before sent to the final assembly line, two Malibu coupes assembled one after the other could very well have sequential body numbers and the VINs might even be sequential but still the VINs are not noted on the body tag.

Follow up on the EKH engine code. Should these three letters also show up on the stamped pad on the front of the engine or only on the protecto plate?

my 66 SS ragtop 396 has the same code and same drivetrain , 396/325hp powerglide AND HOLLEY carb with the ekh suffix on the engine pad and the pop ,the stamp job was a poor job because it angles off the pad and is a light hammered stamp ( KANSAS plant), BUT with the eye you can make it out, motor has 94000 on speedo and has never been opened up !! I'm a second owner and know the orig owner and the dealership is a local dearler still in business .HAVE A SPARE 1966 BLK 396 / 325 4 SPEED WITH EDH for a 4speed HOLLEY 396/325 hp standard bore blk reads T0208 1900-8 EDH if anybody is looking for this vin e-mail me spokane wash, chevy1930@netzero.net

Interesting to know, thanks for the scoop. Mine is an Atlanta car, has the EK on the stamp pad, but no H. The EKH shows up on the protecto-plate though. Not as documented re: ownership as yours either.

The kit is a group of photocopied pages of brochures, some spec sheets, and other material you might find in a new car showroom back then. The amount of information found in kits will vary from year to year as well.
