: 65-66 Rear spring mounts pics?
opivyrocks May 1st, 09, 11:05 AM Hey guys,
Looking at putting a 12 bolt 65 rear in my 67. Does anyone have a picture of the bottom attaching harware for the spring? I assume it should be one big washer and one bolt for each?
thanks

I just put a 65 12 bolt in my 67 last week, straight swap. You need to use the 67-72 style springs.............

opivyrocks May 1st, 09, 12:40 PM Thank you, This is the complete set-up for bolting the spring down? Is there anything that sits on the spring perch (on the rear) to center the spring, or do you just bolt it down tight? thanks
Tom Mobley May 1st, 09, 1:16 PM those plates have a relief stamped into them, act as centering and holddown.
Now here is a question: I have a 66 axle in my 70, I got those plates and they won't fit in my 70 springs? what do I need to fix this?
AZCamino May 1st, 09, 1:46 PM Tom, I don't understand the problem. The retainers are no bigger than the diameter of the pigtail, and have sort of a D shaped center that fits into the pigtail. I can't see the photo that was apparently was posted by Pat so I am not sure what you are looking or what you have on hand. The correct retainers are still available from the GM dealer, Part Number 3763621.

I've seen later springs with round pigtails on both ends and some with a round pigtail on one end/shaped pigtail on the other. The only fix is find springs with the correct shape pigtail on one end or make your own plates or weld some bumps like the later spring perch's have.
I wonder if replacement 67-72 springs have both ends with round pigtails and OEM 67-72 springs have a correctly shaped pigtail on one end that fits the 65-66 hold down plate??????????
The 67 springs I used for my 65 axle to 67 Chevelle swap had one round pigtail and the other end had a correctly shaped pigtail for the early plates........
Here's is some pieces I made to eliminate the early bolt/plate attachment but haven't used them yet. I was planning to weld them on.

That's everything needed to bolt the spring to the perch..........just bolt it down tight.
Hardware from top down; bolt, flat washer, plate, spring, perch, lock washer & nut.
opivyrocks May 1st, 09, 3:24 PM Great , just ordered the plates from Boyles Chevy here in Maryville. Cost $10.49 each
Thanks
DukeNuc May 1st, 09, 3:39 PM The bottom of the springs are the same on 64-67, it is the top that is (can be) different. Based on what I have seen, somewhere during 66 they switched to the double pigtail springs and welded the short round tube to the bottom perch instead of the bolt/plate setup. The top of the spring from 64-somehwere in 66 is large diameter and has a rubber ring that goes onto the top of the spring (isolator). I have seen 66 Chevelles with both types. As far as the rearend goes, it either perch will work with both spring types. The top is where the difference is.
OLDED May 1st, 09, 3:46 PM It is easiest and best to keep the same year springs with the rear assembly. The difference is at the bottom perch. The short pipes shown above, welded in, will work great, I had to do the same to a 66 when I put a 65 diff. into it and didn have the 66 springs.
Mr Chevelle May 1st, 09, 5:01 PM I totally agree that the spring pockets in the frame are different between 1964-1966 and 1967-1972 Chevelle. When changing the axle you need to use a spring matched to the frame, not the axle year. The axle end of the spring will normally fit any 1964-1972 Chevelle axle perch and hardware.
The question is why a 1966 spring attachment plate (kind of "D" shaped) won't fit a 1970 spring pigtail (round in this case). He's talking about the spring perch end of the spring. I've seen springs for 1967 & newer with perfectly round pigtails on both ends which prevent the early "D" shaped attachment plate from fitting either end of the spring correctly. The double round type pigtail spring is obviously made without any concern for early type perch attachment.
I don't know if it's a change only on replacement springs or maybe 68 up went to a round style pigtail on both ends. Maybe 1967 is the only year you get a round pigtail and "D" pigtail on the same spring or maybe OEM springs have both types of pigtails? Good question.........
pwrjunkie80 Oct 26th, 09, 9:27 PM Hate to dust off this thread, but I have a similar question. I have hotchkis 68-72 rear springs 1" drop. Have a 69 chevelle and currently an "O" type rear with the cup perches. I bought a later 67 12 bolt rear (124 code) that someone welded 1/4" thick plates on for the perches. From what I somewhat gathered in this thread, I can use bolts and lock washers to bolt down the spring? Just drill a hole in the plate? Or is it wiser to just weld a bump as suggested?

I am not following you on the 67 perches. The 67 perches should look like the 68-72 rears. Are you saying it's just a flat plate like a 64-66?

Yes it is. Looks like it had the cups, but someone welded the flat plates on like a moran. Sturdy and straight though. So Im guessing I would need to drill a hole in the plates to screw in the bolt and clamp? I havent actually seen the 64-66 clamp, so Im only imagining what how it would work.
