My 1970 Chevelle build sheet is old and crumbly. One of the options is the evaporative emissions control because it as a California car. I can't make out the first letter/number, but what I see is A9 EVAP EMS CTRL
There is a character before the A9, does anyone know what that is supposed to be?
thx

The letter is "N" ~ option is RPO NA9. Check here (http://www.chevellestuff.com/70stuff/70velle/70_build_vannuys.htm) for a Van Nuys build sheet clearly showing the option; 3rd column, 3rd item. FWIW, the asterisk (*) meant it was a standard assembly line option, (#) and (=) was meant to alert the body shop, and (%) and (o) was to alert the trim shop.

Thanks Dale for your quick response. I've got a few copies of build sheets, and none of them had this RPO.
My only other 'fuzzy' RPO is my =M20 line which I think reads: =M20 4 SPD-WS TRANS, but I'm pretty sure I'm not reading it right.
What is the line supposed to read?
thnx

If it's a floor mounted shift it should read M20 4 SPD FS (floor shift) TRANS. Looking at examples from various plants, not all were exactly alike. Atlanta didn't include the *, $, or % symbols on the transmission; Arlington used the * symbol; Baltimore used the # symbol and, strangely, listed a M21 example as #M21 4 SPD-CLS RAT which to me would mean 'close ratio' and the M22 as #M22 HD 4 SPD TRAN; Flint used no symbol; KC no symbol but coded the M20 and M21 alike - M20(M21) 4 SPD FS TRAN. Note the difference between the M21 at KC and the M21 at Baltimore; Van Nuys used the = symbol and coded the M21 as 4-SPD CLS RAT.
Many times it's important to know where a car was assembled as documentation did vary (and sometimes even parts) from plant to plant. Very little was cast in stone. A thread about F41 front springs showed that different plants might use the same spring rate on a 396 w/AC as it did on a 454 w/o AC where another plant would use different spring rates for the same two cars. Looking at POPs, Body Plates, and Build Sheets, I'm discovering when someone says something as a general fact (like all F41 suspension options are the same) isn't always the case as there were variations from plant to plant.

Okay, it was built at the Van Nuys plant the second week of October and was the wide ratio M20. I am getting a really good digital camera with a macro lense so I can show you the build sheet. From what you know, what is the Van Nuys M20 supposed to read on the build sheet?
