: Fan Shroud Alignment
JWagner Apr 30th, 09, 4:20 PM I have noticed on several Chevelles that the fan shrouds are shattered in the upper left area , obviously from contact with the fan. I just put a not damaged shroud in place and noticed that the clearance at the top of the shroud is far smaller than the bottom. I used up all of the slot for the mounting screws and it still looks lopsided. If I move the shroud up more by lengthening the slots, the fit in the clips at the bottom would be iffy.
What is the next step or is this just the way it is?
66 Chevelle Bob Apr 30th, 09, 5:30 PM J: This was NEVER an issue back in the 60's because GM built the shrouds correctly and precise. I bought a New 1966 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed at the Air Force BX while in Vietnam and had it waiting when I got back to Islip, Long Island. Set me back a whopping $2800 with the military discount-Wish I bought a dozen of them now. Kept the Chevelle for 18 years and NEVER had a shroud rubbing problem. Anyway-My bitch is the parts that were buying are NOT precise, NOT well made or sometimes NOT even correct. Most are made oversea's to save a buck and we get the screw. So-In answer to your rubbing shroud, I went thru two shrouds myself last year before I gave up and went to Electric Fans. I just think there's no quality control overseas with the plastic molds that they use. Also-Buying from another vendor won't help since they all end up buying from the company who make them anyway.
Imagine in 20 years what the parts will be like for our kids..!!

SWHEATON Apr 30th, 09, 10:17 PM HHHMMMM,fan shroud that's shattered in the upper left/drivers side,that's usally from a bad motor mount .
Not trying to discredit anyone but from my experience in this case it's not the repop shrouds that are the issue because i have installed a few of them over the past few yrs in peoples car and not had any clearance/aln issues at all with them.
But,if the motor mount is bad/broken the motor can at times lift up just far enough on left/driver side when you get on the gas hard to force the fan blade into the shroud and breaking it.
Could also in isolated cases be issues with front end accidents with radiator supports that were not repaired properly causing radiator/fan shroud aln issues or worse yet motor aln issues possibly due to a bent frame.
I have seen that sanrio a few times over the past 37+ yrs i have been working on muscle cars but i have never had a repop aftermaket fan shroud so far out of wack that i could not get it to aln well enough for proper fan clearance and or for it to not look right either.
But i have to admit i have had other repop aftermaket muscle car parts that were garbage and or didnt fit/work propely so they are out there, thats for sure but i just havent seen it "YET" when it comes to fan shoruds.

Robinls5 May 1st, 09, 12:34 PM The lower shroud brackets on the core support are in a fixed position. You can raise the shroud by inserting a piece of insulated wire where the shroud sets on the bottom of the lower brackets. I raised mine about 3/16" of a inch. My shroud is an OEM 1970, fan is a 772.
An extra 3/16" is a lot when you are close. ALSO using an off the wall fan blade, This may cause problems. A Chevy 772 fan blade is contoured at the tips to match the inside radius of the stock fan shroud.
Using all stock parts, Most of time you will not encounter fitment issues. Yea I am an old geeser and I use to mix and match parts and try to make S-!T work.
For the most part ,,,,,I never had the time or money to do it right, BUT I ALWAYS had time to do it OVER !

x2. Exactally what happened to mine last fall. The mechanical fan had taken little chunks out of the shroud and I never checked the motor mounts, just thought the shroud didn't fit correctly. One day the motor mount gave way and the fan destroyed itself, a belt, the radiator and bent the water pump shaft. At least that chain of events led me to getting an Alumitech radiator and electric fan setup that fit perfectly.
Xtreme70SS396 May 1st, 09, 2:17 PM Raise your tranny mount up 1/4" with washers, you'll be fine.
JWagner May 1st, 09, 5:46 PM Thanks for the input. The shrouds I have/had are oem stuff. And the motor mounts are now new. I am sure you are right about having a broken mount sometime in the past. I managed to cut up 2 damaged shrouds and make one good one and was concerned about the tight clearance at the top. I will try shimming the rear trans mount.
Keith Tedford May 1st, 09, 10:38 PM You might also want to check your rad support mounts. They are what set the height of the rad support and everything bolted to it including the fan shroud. The only other thing that can cause problems is the above mentioned engine mounts. The fan shroud only bolts in in one position so there really is no adjustment there other than cheating things a little.

Keith is correct on the rad support mounts. They are prone to rot and sagging. Battery acid will destroy the bushings and the metal mounts. X2 on broken motor mounts. A rotted tranny mount will sag the rear of the drivetrain and raise the fan toward top of shroud.
