Need help. I have a 69 Chevelle with paint code 61 Burnish brown? Does any one know how many cars were painted with this color? How "RARE" is it really? I also have another 69 Chevelle with the cowl tag paint code "--" Anyone know what color that is??

'--' means the car was painted a special ordered color. Not one of the standard colors for that year. The color would be listed on the build sheet for the car.

And as of today, they don't even know. Huh? I think you mean that (1) either there were no records kept with this breakdown or (2) what records there might have been have been reported 'lost' so there's no way to find out.

There's been rumor of an ongoing data collection of these supposedly 'lost' records but I haven't heard any updates in a few months.

Suffice to say that the Burnished Brown color wasn't one of the darlings of the day and nice ones today do draw attention.

The owner's name of this nice 69 convertible (http://www.chevellestuff.com/69velle/gallery/61_burnished_brown.jpg) eludes me but I saw it at CB 2002 or CB 2003 and again at Good Guys at Texas Speedway.

Think back to 1969. You're say, 19-23 years old. With red, multiple blue's & gold's, and black becoming more popular, you want a brown car? Today, maybe you're in your late 40's, maybe 50's, and you want something a little different and unique. Red, blue's and gold's are everywhere...brown...that draws everyone's admiring glances 'cause nobody else has one. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Just referring to them saying basically the same thing you just did when talking about a 1969 Brown Chevelle SS.
In their Auction Action section they state:
"We mean, who buys a Brown Muscle car?
Red,Blue,Orange, even rental car White..but Brown? Cripes...looks like the President of Hershey's staff car."

I never thought of 'rental car white' before.

What the heck was that tirade in HMM about? The writer just went on and on (referring back to it in reviews of other cars) about what a horrible color the brown was. It's one thing to express your opinion about it, but that was excessive.

I happen to like Burnished brown! If I were in the market, it would certainly not deter me.

My uncle owned a '69 Impala sport sedan in Burnished Brown with a tan vinyl roof cover & interior. It looked very nice on that car. If you ask him today he'll say it was his favorite car (owned it until trading it for a new '76 Impala).

Besides the bright colours that were 'in' with the musclecar crowd I recall earth tones being big around 1970 with the ecology movement that was happening around that time, although I can't seem to recall many chocolate brown '69s.

I thought Don Seributra (sp?) from this site had some vintage pics on his personal website of his dad's stock Burnished Brown '69 Malibu sport coupe with a 307 & 3-in-the-tree.
