: VIN on 1967 Muncie M21 & M21/M22 identification

I need help with two questions.

1. Should a 1967 Muncie should have the VIN stamped into it? One source says the VIN should be stamped into the top of the transmission. If so, is it visible using a mirror, and where on the case is it located?

2. Since the M21's and M22's have the same case casting #s, how can one tell one from the other without disassembly?

Thanks.

1967 Chevelle SS never came with an M-22..that makes that easy ;)

On top of the case yes... be hard to see IMO without the Trans out of the car.

If it's Canadian-built '67 Chevelle they only came with M20s (Muncie with the 396).

The SS Fact book says, "No records are available on the 1967 M22 transmission as it applies to the SS 396 Chevelle and therefore it would appear that no 1967 SS 396 Chevelle came factory equipped with the M22 4-speed." That's not to say they NEVER came with one, just none have been documented, right?
