A recent post brought up a question of what is the casting number used on 1968 12 bolts. The number 3917124 was listed but my search of the Team Chevelle forums came up with only 2 hits: one was a 12 bolt of unknown origin, and another had an assembly code that started with LE indicating it's original source was probably a 68 GTO or Grand Prix. Any kind of information on 1968 seems to be hard to find.

I'd like to hear from owners of 68 Chevelles/El Caminos. What is the casting number, casting date, and assembly code of the 12 bolt in your vehicle and do you believe it is original to the vehicle. The build date of your car would be interesting, also. Thanks

Bruce, My 68 has the original 12 bolt rear. Here are the numbers:

Date Code~B228
Code~CF
Build date of car~May/1st week
There is also an E on a machined surface to the immediate right of the cover. Not sure what that means.
Could it be the date (May) it was installed in the car??

looked yesterday 3917124 is right i need to scrape some grease to find the rest of the #'s but will try to do that tonight

I posted this question earlier and this is the info that I received. Mine is close to the 54" and it takes the shorter axel.


E 10 7 = May 10th '67 cast date

3917124= found one previous post calling this a 68-72 casting? Measure between mounting plates,If
close to 54 1/2" it's 67 rear, if 55 1/2" it's a 68 rear.

0517=May 17th rear assembly date, (late 67 or early 68)

B= Buffalo axle plant

E= Eaton posi

_F= ?? should be two letters
CF=3.31 posi
KF=3.55 posi

It sounds like they used the casting 3917124 center section for short (67) and long (68).
