The 64-81 Chilton Chevy A-body manual shows the 400 in 70, not in 71-73, then again in 74. That's general info, not specific to any particular model.
In a couple of hours my son and I are going to look at one for sale (his ebay Blazer isn't working out) and I'd thought someone here would know Elkys.
The man said it came with the 400/TH400, but now has a 350. I noticed a 402 available, and was wondering if that may be the one often miscalled a 400.
Thanks.

I see a LT4 400CID option in my assembly manual, but the reference page also says "Cancelled" on it, with no other info...

Thanks Cecil.
He passed, way too much rust. It was described as having "a little rust", but that meant a little path of rust all the way down both sides among a few other places.
It did have 400 emblems on the fenders.

I have an engine suffix code for a 71 Chevelle (maybe Elky as well) of CLJ for a 400cid 2-bbl (manual trans) and CLK for a 400cid 2-bbl (TH350 trans). These are small blocks rated at 255hp but I don't show any specific suffix codes for one with a TH400. Check the front pad for either of those suffix codes - CLJ or CLK - if the engine works out to be the original.
Sometimes some paperwork referred to the 402-4 (big block 396/402 cid) as a 400-4 - particularly someone like Chilton's. My very old 64-71 Chilton's even shows the 70 402 engine as V8 400 (402).
You also might want to check out my ChevelleStuff web site in my signature block. Lots of info there for 64-72 Velles/Elkys and always looking for more data to add.

Thanks Dale.
I was asking to see if it came from GM with a big block because of the TH400. The original motor was replaced.
