Just got my 5 year project (65 Mali SS) rolling. Speedometer won't work. Have properly installed new speedo gears from BTO on 700r4 with original speedo head and cable. Was working fine when I took the 60k orig mi car apart. I have spun the cable from the trans side of the cable with drill (counter clockwise) and speedo works fine. I have spun the rear gear of 700r4 in neutral with drive shaft disconnected and trans gear reciever (that the cable end goes into) rotates. WHAT IN THE HECK IS HAPPENING? Going down the road a 0 no matter what! Can it be that the additional length of the newly installed 700 is stretching the length limit of the internal cable so that it is not engaging with the tapperd receiver on the speedo gear in the trans. If so now what? I would appreciate any experince you may have and share or any ideas. BTW please take a look at my first attemp to hot rod a Malibu I am very proud being my first!!

Sorry I'm not able to shed light on your problem with the speedo, it's also got me stumped. But that car of yours is freakin' beautiful.!!!! I do like the '65's! Good luck.

Thanks Rich! Only thing I know to do is remove the old cable and order a new maybe longer cable and try that unless someone else has an idea.

Autozone has the right length ones for cheap, I have needed a couple of them over the years. I think they were less than $15. For mine TH350 it was 63" (I think). Somebody will have the right answer for you... Long live the '65.

Are you serious? $15 for a new cable ..... what a deal? Thanks again for the compliment on the car! First "small" show entered brought in a 1st Place Trophy with lots of things to fix. But "its rollin" and I am proud of that. Kinda quick too for a street 350 w/air. Can't wait to spray it after a couple of hundred miles. However the purge with the blue led's are "killer" at dusk! " 65 and Alive" ( OLD SCHOOL IS STILL COOL!).

Is it possible that the speedo driven gear can be indexed into the case in more than one position? I had this in a Jeep, where the gear went into the transfer case. Apparently the gear is mounted off center in a round mount, so it can be closer or farther away from the trans shaft to accomodate different drive gears.
I moved it and it worked fine afterwards?

I think there are different housings for different gears. You have to use a 44 tooth housing for 44 tooth gears, etc.

Gents... thanks for the comments! Got sidetracked and haven't replaced the cable of date. Will update the issue after new cable try. This is a challenge!
