I am rebuilding my 69 Chevelle M-20. I dont know what horrible linkage was slapped onto this car before I owned it but now that I have the trans. out, I am replacing it. I believe what I want to do is Hurst linkage with the Muncie stick to make it look original. The trans. is a 69 M-20. What hurst linkage part number will fit that, and is there fabrication needed to put the muncie stick on it?
thanks,
Walter

Buy the Hurst shifter that is specific for a 69-72 Chevelle and then get the replica handle with M U N C I E stamped on it for the "factory" look. You can't beat it. Also our sponsor, GROUND UP has this in kit form ready to go. You can get the bench or bucket shifter handle. I have buckets/console in the 70, but prefer the bench handle.

Here's the bench handle----and the console/bucket handle.

With the Chevelle that I bought new, the shifter never worked right and the dealer couldn't make it work right. Eventually a part in the linkage broke. Friends also had shifting problems. Most of us went to the Hurst Competition Plus and never had a problem. The Hurst was in our car for over 150K miles and will go back in again when the car is done. I added the Muncie handle to the Hurst linkage in our 396 car. Looks original but works, and that shifter was installed by the original owner back in the day according to him. That Hurst too still works fine. I don't know what the Hurst shifter quality is like today, but the old ones sure were excellent.
My original shifter has the handle that is a welded in part of the assembly. The shifter in our 396 car has the handle attached to the linkage by two bolts. Our '72 Lemans Sport had the original GM factory Hurst shifter. It had the push in handle, so there are at least three variations that you could be looking at.

My dad was so aggravated with the stock muncie shifter that he threw it in the garbage when the car was three years old. he wouldn't even throw it in the scrap pile to take to the junkyard. it still has the competition plus in it now. They use to carry a long screwdriver in the car specifically for unjamming the linkage. My brother's 72 had stock linkage for about 2years before he switched to a hurst. It's 100000000 times better. I burned myself on the exhaust the one time I drove it to work and jammed the linkage at the gas station. Muncie linkage is garbage.
