The bottom of my front fenders are pretty well completely rusted out on my 68 malibu, as usual. The rust goes up about 10 inches from what I can see before I strip the car down. Once I get them stripped, Im sure the rust goes up alot higher than that.

Here are my options.

Repair the ones I've got (I am not very experienced with body work).

Buy aftermarket sheetmetal (questionable fitment, and more flimsy) for about 250-275 each plus most likely some shipping costs.

Or I found a guy with some perfectly solid fenders, supposedly no rust at all off of a 68 El Camino. He wants $200 each for them, and I would have to travel about 4 hours each way or have them shipped.

The choice seems pretty obvious to me, but just looking for some quick input. Is $200 each a decent price for the fenders I described?

You may still have some fitment issues with the used ones, even though they came off a car....every car is a little different. Some people prefer GM stuff, others have no problem with aftermarket. Regardless of what you do, I'd expect to have a few issues be it fitment or a few waves to straighten out.

Something else to remember is that even though the repro fenders are thinner, the metallurgy is better meaning they won't rust as fast if you're in an area that is prone to that. If you're into racing....it means less weight:yes:

Yeah, thats something I wasnt thinking of. I would assume that they would fit a little easier than aftermarket though right?

I am very concerned with fitment, since I dont have very much experience with body work.

Also, does $200 each seem like a decnt price for some fenders like this?

I haven't really researched used fender prices lately....when I had my sheetmetal done, it was all aftermarket. The body shop dealt with the fitment issues....most they had to do with my doors was cut a little off the front edge to clear the fenders and smooth the waves out.

It really comes down to what you want and what you're willing to do. I, personally wanted to know there would be no rust anywhere....then again, my doors were toast as well and I had to buy pretty much everything anyway.

I know 1970 year ElCamino fenders are different that Chevelle fenders....
Not sure about your year...
Before you buy....
Check some online catalogs to see if what you are interested in will fit.

I'd be most interested in the used ones, but I'd want to look at them in person... I wouldn't buy used sheetmetal sight-unseen.

That's 70-72 only, all 64-69 fenders interchange between all models of the same year. 68-69 interchange between years, but the hole for the side lights are in a different location... my '69 has one '68 fender on it. :)

for a $75 difference i would go new sheetmetal all the way! think about 5 years down the road when those used ones start bubbling or what not. i dont know about you but im not a big fan of body work and if im going to take the time to do it i want to do it right the first time! good luck

Original sheet metal will last as long as the repro stuff if properly repaired, stripped, primed, and painted. And the fitment is definitely better.
