67shovel Apr 28th, 09, 11:42 AM Aircraft stripper. I unfold a bunch of cardboard boxes and set them under the sides of the car to catch the drips. start on the roof and pour out a couple of cups. wearing plastic gloves, use a squeegy to spread it out and then let it sit for 5 minutes or so. The stripper is basically lacquer thinner and wax. You put it on and it starts to skim over to hold the lacquer on the paint. Thats why you don't want to keep messing with it once you have it where you want it. Now take the squeegy and scrape it to another spot and let it sit. Pretty soon the stripper starts getting real thick and it will stick on the sides better now. I pick up the drippings with a dust pan and slap it back on the sides. It can make a mess if you let it get away from you and it burns the skin so have the hose near by in case you have an accident. I pressure wash the car after scraping the paint off and brush it with a wire brush and spray it some more. Now head in with your DA and you get it in bare metal preety quick. You should tape your seems up unless your going to strip them also.
JNorton Apr 28th, 09, 12:40 PM Yep, Aircraft stripper. I found Kleen-Strip at Home depot in gallon cans. Worked pretty good for me. I brush it on with those 99 cent paint brushes. Wear safety glasses. Not like the stuff splashes around, but you can never be too careful with the ol' peepers.
curley8788 Apr 28th, 09, 3:59 PM i just used some on the car and it really works. nasty stuff tho. i bought a mask and used gloves. when i got a drip on my arm it really burns. lesson learned.
TonyGilliam Apr 28th, 09, 4:44 PM I haven't been able to find it locally, but Capt'n Lee's Spra-strip is the best stuff. about 30 bucks a gallon and I used 3 gallons to do my entire 65 chevelle.
xsqzme Apr 28th, 09, 6:22 PM and another tip. apply aircraft stripper and then cover with plastic. keeps the solvents in and it wont dry as fast. works really good.
When I stripped my Malibu last year I used aircraft stripper from Autozone, Kleen-Strip from Lowes and another brand from there. They all performed about the same (not real well). It took numerous applications of any of them to get to metal. None of them seemed as strong as the stuff I used 10 years ago, in being effective, fume-wise, or burn-wise when on skin. Next time I'll mechanically strip.
Wiley Apr 28th, 09, 8:30 PM Can't add anymore but, I'd be happy with a bad stripper.
Bunz-T Apr 28th, 09, 9:23 PM I still would like to know how much an Aircraft Stripper gets for a lap dance.:D
