just installed a 350 in my 68 and while idling it heats up to 185 /190 in about 15 mins.is this ok?the 307 i took out would idle for at least 30 mins before it reached 180.during cam break in it never went over 190.should i be concerned ? ,seems kinda quick to me .have not checked to see where the timing is at and have not checked the idle mixture yet .with them not set properly would it case it to heat up quickly? or is this ok?i realize i need to do some tuning before i take it down the road and see what temp it will run at.thanks for your input. bob

It's fine. The thermostat is doing it's job. The quicker it warms up, the better, as long as it doesn't overheat.

Bob,keep this is mind, retarded base timing with even a mild perf cam will also make it heat up faster as will not running vac adv to full int vacuum all the time for more timing at idle too.
So if you running a comp/crane/lunati/etc aftermarket cam you cant run the gm stock timing spec of approx 4-6-8 deg, with a perf cam you need 16-18 deg base timing, gms timing specs are way to retarded by approx 10-12 for an aftermarket perf cam which is significant.
Retarded base timing with perf cam results in a considerable loss of power/poor throttle responce/reduced fuel mileage/and hotter running motor esp at idle and or lower engine speeds before total timing is fully in.
Dont forget to lidle motor low like 600-650 rpm when checking/setting base timing to ensure mech adv in dist isnt partially activated at idle, also need to unhook & plug vac adv when checking/setting timing too.
Look for 36-38 total max all in by approx 2800rpms.
Then after checking or setting base timing and total timing at approx 3k rpms to ensure it's all in by that rpm and not over 38 deg after that you need to reattach the vac adv to full intake vacuum all the time ,then reset idle speed and idle mixture too.
BTW,i see your from CT,i am from NY and live approx 50-55 mins away from the Marcus dairy saturday night cruise which i go to oncein a whiule,so have you been there this yr?

Bob,Marcus Dairy is diagonally accross from the Danbury mall, they attract anywhere from 200-400+ cars on Saturday pm cruises, starts approx 5pm.
It's best to get there early to get a good spot ,then you can also setup a folding chair and watch/listed to all the hot cars running when they are idling into the cruise, its a great parade of hot cars to watch.
