thanks mike...ok, i got cw, means 331, 0531 means may 31, and b means buffalo..and 3917124 means late prodution..dumb question is it a 67 or 68????

I'd say May 31 would be late '67 production.

If a width of a cigarette pack fits between the backing plate and the lower control arm bracket is a 67 with the narrow width. Otherwise it's a 68 or early 69, the wider rear. Maybe May 31 of 68

Am i missing a no.??? Cw0531b(cw=331,05=may,31=31st day,b=buffalo) got it!! The other no. I got is 3917124 (according to the decode it says that it is late production)..ive got a chevy by the no.s book and it says that it could be a 65-69 rear end?? Confused??? Is there a casting date no. On this rear so i can make sure its a 67 rear end?? None of the two numbers that the guy gave me pin this rear down as a 67 rear?? Confused!!

Yes, there should be a casting date on one of the webs (right side in 67, I think) facing the rear. The casting should help determine if it is the narrower 67 housing. If the casting date precedes the May 31st assembly date with a 7 after it (would look similar to E317), that would be good indication that this is a late 67 model year housing. If the last digit is 8, then that would be good indication the housing is a 68 model year housing. It is unknown when the production of the 1968 housings might have actually begun so there will always be that uncertainty unless you actually measure the width of the housing, but a May date in 1967 seems early enough that it would be a 67 housing.

Thats why I use the cigarette pack, its a quite determination of a early (narrow rear) or the later wide rear.
