: How rare is our 67 L-79?
notstock71 Nov 15th, 04, 10:49 PM After much help from others on this site we now know our 67 Chevelle project is an L-79 car.
My question is how rare is this car? I found a production number of 4000. This is alot less than the SS's.
Does the factory triple black and Muncie 4 speed make it even rarer?
The original engine is no longer with the car. The 3rd owner said he blew it in 71.
What is an approximate value once the frame off is done? The body is straight and the paint is nice. It isn't perfect but nice above average driver quality.
DaleM Nov 15th, 04, 11:01 PM I'd say the number is probably an educated guess. Also, I'd say that any triple black 67 is relatively rare (compared to the reds and blues) since black wasn't a common color in the mid 60s.
Unfortunately since the original engine is gone, the value is naturally less than if it had it. I'd say it'd be *worth* in the neighborhood of $18k to $22k with a good restification. I've seen numerous clean 67 Malibus in that range. If it was a numbers matching car, half again as much or more.
DougA Nov 16th, 04, 8:28 AM If you go to the Maryland Chevelle clubs website and on the hilites section look under page 7 of the 17th show(last year)you will see a red 67 L79 Malibu that belongs to a very good friend of mine.He is the original owner, car still has the original engine in it, and M20 Muncie.I remember when he bought it new,and I dont remember seeing many of these set up like this.Funny part is his Dad wouldnt let him buy a 396 car, said it was too much engine,so he ended up ordering the 327 instead.Probably rarer in the long run.
notstock71 Nov 16th, 04, 8:51 AM I'm having a terrible time finding information on these cars. Everything is about the SS's. Anyone know where a good resource site is for L-79 cars?
Rich-L79 Nov 16th, 04, 9:49 AM I see you are from Omaha. I have a friend in Valley that has three '67 L79 cars. One is the one of the best restored cars I've ever seen. Another is an unmolested original and another is a very rough El Camino. I have a '65 L79 if that's any help. My web site is full of info on my '65. I also have a lot of pictures of my friend's '67s. I have a good amount of information on the '65 and '67 L79 cars and just a little on the '68s. Let me know if I can help.
notstock71 Nov 16th, 04, 10:27 AM I just want to try and learn as much as possible about these cars. I didn't know they made them until recently. I would really like to see pics of your friends restored 67.
The funny thing is dad got this car and nobody knew what it was. Everyone thought it was a 6 cyl/powerglide car someone converted.
Rich, do you go to the all Chevy show at H&H? We make sure to go to that one. It's a good time, tons of nice people. I'd like to see your car too.
Rich-L79 Nov 16th, 04, 1:11 PM I've never been to the H&H show, it always conflicts with our club activities. A good friend of mine and our club VP had his freshly restored '66 SS there this year, perhaps you saw it. It was inside, it is white with a red interior.
notstock71 Nov 16th, 04, 2:02 PM I think it would be pretty neat to bring the club to the show next year. If they can do it for the Vette and Camaro clubs why not Chevelles. I never made it to the showroom this year. Maybe he will be there next year. There is an original owner red SS that is always there. It is a real nice car. I think he belongs to your club if memory serves me right.
Why was an L-79 Chevelle rated at 325 hp in 67 when everything else I find for L-79 cars shows 350 horsepower.

Essentially the same engine as earlier models but GM didn't want it to *compete* with the newly introduced SS (in 66) 396 with 325 and 350 (360 in 66) hp. I don't think the L79 was even available in 66, the L30 327/275 was the top small block.
Rich-L79 Nov 16th, 04, 11:29 PM Dale hit the nail on the head. Chevy claimed revised exhaust cost the engine 25hp which is total BS since the manifolds are the same but the exhaust system is even larger than used in '65. In '65 the L79 had 2.5 inch head pipes with 2 inch tail pipes with resonators. In '67 the L79 got 2.5 inch head pipes with 2.25 inch tails with no resonators.
joe58 Nov 17th, 04, 8:18 AM Chevy had sort of an underground racing support group that was well aware of a good Stock or Super Stock combo. I would not be surprised if Chevy kept making the L79 Chevelles and Novas just to supply the drag racers. 50 cars were required to make it NHRA Super Stock legal and 500 required for NHRA Stock class.
ericthedrum Nov 18th, 04, 10:47 AM There were 4,048 L-79 Chevelles made in 1967. You could get a L-79 for 1966, but I beleive that only around 100 were made.
Rich, I would be interested in the information that you have on the 67 L-79s.
Rich-L79 Nov 18th, 04, 1:43 PM I don't have any of my '67 L79 stuff on the 'net. I did write an article that appeared in Super Chevy's Chevelle magazine, Winter 2002 that covers Chevelle L79 history and has some photos of '67 L79s. I have other photos and a little documentation. E-mail me with specific requests or questions and I'll do my best to help. You can find the article on my web site:

notstock71 Nov 18th, 04, 6:34 PM Thanks for the lead on the magazine. I am going to find the whole magazine. Maybe Ebay? I just sandblasted the firewall today. What a mess. Talk about stressful (not trying to chip the paint). Next comes the floors. I honestly think this is hands down the worst part of doing this. Maybe I can talk the wife into a rotissere for whatever I buy next (either doing a General Lee or find a Camaro).
