I keep having starter problems with my car (1965 Chevelle, mild 350 crate motor, manual four speed). When it's messed up, nothing happens when I turn the key. No clicking, no nothing. I use a stock GM starter. A header tube runs close to the starter. I would prefer not to go to a mini-starter. Is this a problem with the exhaust heat cooking the solenoid? If so, what to do?

Do all the basic checks first...
- Load test on the battery
- Good/Clean/Tight battery terminal connections, and just replace them if you're using those clamp-on replacement ends!
- Good/Clean/Tight cable connections to the block & starter (all wires)
- +12V to the solenoid wire when you turn the key through it's travel (possible ign. switch problem)
- Bench test on the starter (auto parts store)

I've been running a stock GM (rebuilt) starter on my 383 for 15 years. I did eventually fabricate a heat-shield for it, as a header tube is running very close to the solenoid, and it would be slow cranking if re-started hot.

Yes, I tested those things. I have not tested or replaced the ignition switch. I've been through a few starters. At first, the starter works fine. Then, once in awhile when hot, the solenoid does not click. Then, I have to park the car on a hill to make sure it will start. I bought a Moroso heat shield. It would not fit. Maybe, I should try one of those heat blankets. I was told not to heat wrap the header tubes because it causes rust through problems.
