How do you find out if your motor is a matching numbers to your car. WHere do you find the numbers on the block to match it to the cars vin number.

You will find stamped numbers on a pad on the deck of the block just in front of the edge of the passenger side cylinder head.

Although this is off a 70, it's a clear picture of what to look for. One stamping is the engine ID code (T0117CRT in this case) and the second stamping is the VIN derivative (10A126571 in this case).

1 ~ Chevrolet
0 ~ Model Year (1970)
A ~ Atlanta assembly plant
126571 ~ last 6 digits of VIN

You may also find the vin derivative stamped vertically by the oil filter at the back of the block where it mates to the transmission.

No my friend has a 70 ss396 and he wants to make sure the block is numbers matching. so its on the front of the block.
