: Low oil pressure

I am not a mechanic so here I am lol. A friend has a number matching 69 Camaro 350 sb. His oil pressure is barely reading pressure. So assuming his gauge is correct I fear he is in a bit of trouble. What would you check first? Oil pump I guess. What are some of the scenerios. Could it be something very simple or does it sound bad.

What is the history? Did it used to have good pressure?
I would start with a oil change check for metal in oil (silver streaks in oil) and use a wire to see if the oil pump pick-up has fallen off.

or a colapsed oil filter.

Well some more info. When the car is cold and at idle the pressure is around 25 to 30 and drops to almost nothing when warmed up. He Just changed the oil and the filter was good and no metal as well. He car does tick under throttle but he said it's not as loud now after the oil change.

still not much to go on.....
Has the pressure drop been on-going or after he ran it hard some Fri night?
What oil?
What filter?
How many miles on the combo?
history of the car and engine?

Very easy indeed to hook that bad boy up to a store-bought oil pressure gauge to verify

'ticking under throttle' does not sound very good.
pressure dropping when warming up does not sound good either!

Had the same problem, just fixed it this weekend had no pressure checked it with a few gauges and still had no pressure. Oil pump pickup fell off. Installed a new pump and pickup now i have plenty of pressure.

The oil pump pick up was what I told him as well but I don't know what I am talking about most of the time. The only reason I knew of this is I overheard someone talking about it. Is the pickup inside or outside of the oil pan? As for a fix I am guessing the motor will have to be lifted a little if it is on the inside. Hope these questions don't sound too dumb lol.

Yes the pickup is inside the oil pan.you might want to pull the motor out of the car to do it, or do like i did put the car on a lift and use jacks to lift engine but its a lot of work and i have a big block. Might have more room with a 350 so if i had to do it again i would pull the motor

If the pickup had dropped off, it wouldn't make any difference if the engine is hot or cold, no oil would get picked up and you'd have no pressure at any time. Sounds like bearings have worn out, most often it's the cam bearings. An engine pull is in order, regardless.
And I'll second the notion that Fram filters are junk. I won't run 'em on anything. IMHO, they should have Billy May selling 'em, great advertising but poor product.
