Fremont (BF) seems to be a unique case with 64 Chevelle body tags. Atlanta, Baltimore, KC, and Van Nuys all used a 3-digit code for paint while Fremont used a 3-letter code, ala 1965 and up and Canadian (GM codes). Based on a couple of cars I've seen up-close-and-personal, the first two letters are the standard upper/lower colors like CC for Ermine White and CP for Ermine White over Azure Aqua.

The question is what is the third letter for? Here are three examples I have.
1. CC A paint, 714 (black) seats
2. CP C paint, 750 (aqua) seats
3. CC A paint, 722 (aqua) seats

I had assumed (bad, I know) the third letter referred to the interior trim paint color. Black trim (A on #1) would go with a white (CC) car, white trim (C on #2) would go with a white/aqua (CP) car, but black trim (A on #3) wouldn't go with a white (CC) car and aqua trim. :confused:

Anyone shed light on the meaning of the 3rd letter? All 3 are 5837 SS 2 dr hardtops so it can't be a convertible top color and vinyl tops weren't available in 64.

Third letter code seems to only match the lower body color or black. Wheel color would seem to fit this format.

Hmmm. Assuming "A" to be black and "C" being white using GM paint codes, that'd put black wheels on the two white cars and white wheels on the white/aqua car. Maybe paint type, i.e. Acrylic vs something else? All three body plates say "Magic Mirror Acrylic Lacquer" but then the plates were pretty standard. Odd, but either a possibility I guess.

When I die, I want to come back at the same time in history. In 64 I was 18 and 18 to 26 would have been good years to visit these plants and talk to folks to find out just what was what. :D

From my 1958-64 Late Great Chevy Judging Guide

Letter Paint codes

Letter codes consist of 2 or 3 letters representing the color used in the following sequence;

1st letter = Lower color
2nd letter = upper color

In some cases single colors may appear with 2 letters such as VV, or VVC for a 2-tone, red with white top.

From my experience: wheels were painted with enamel even though the body was painted with lacquer. Wheel color was usually defined by the original tires installed and/or type of wheelcover. Whitewall tires generally got black wheels. A tire/wheel/hubcap combination with blackwalls or dog dish covers usually had body colored wheels.

Alan Colvin writes in Chevrolet By The Numbers 1960-1964:

In 1964, there were sometimes double and triple letter codes used on the trim tag. The first letter would indicate the lower body color. The second letter would indicate the upper body color for non-convertibles or wheel color for convertibles. If a third letter is present, it will designate the wheel color for non-convertible cars.

My interpretation: The three trim tags from Fremont are all Super Sports so they would have all had the full size wheelcovers. The two white cars with black wheels would have had whitewall tires and the white/aqua car with white wheels would have had blackwall tires.
