: power steering dipstick/cap info
We are trying to find the "correct" power steering dipstick/cap for our 67 SS chevelle. Can anyone give us a hand on where to look? Also, did they come with the saginaw unit? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Penny:thumbsup:
JIML82 Apr 25th, 09, 11:38 PM This is a scan of a 1965-66 Corvette power steering pump. The correct capstick on a 1967 Chevelle power steering pump should be metal and look just like the one in the scan. Later capsticks were made of plastic, they were round with scallops on the outside. The later capsticks would still rotate and click into the old reservoirs. Saginaw updated their old service power steering pumps with the latest design plastic capsticks in 1969 so the original metal capsticks may be hard to find.

sbvelleman Apr 26th, 09, 1:21 AM Modern Chevrolet ( www.oldmusclecars.com (http://www.oldmusclecars.com) ) lists them. Pt. # 5695670 Big Block with remote reservoir or pt. # 5690846 64-67 exc. BB . There in the 64-67 catalog, suspension and steering section, page 6-8 .
james a larson Apr 26th, 09, 10:35 AM The 67 SS came with the remote reservoir. The 67 SB had the set-up that Jim showed. I have seen a couple of early 67 SS cars with the same cap as the 66SS came with. Which is different than the 67. Also seen a 66 cap ( a F E cap) that I think might be correct for 66 or early 67.
Nobody reproduces either of these 66 caps. And I have heard the repo 67 caps are a little different the originals (believe the ears are shaped a little different).
I think that term "dipstick/cap" was confusing. You probably have the wrong pump on your car if it is a true SS.
AZCamino Apr 26th, 09, 10:45 AM I agree with Jim Larson. A 67SS would use the remote reservoir with the short waterpump 396 engine. The caps for these remote reservoirs did not have a dipstick. A correct cap for 67 would be the same as in 1968 with the ears. These are still available but have different wording on the cap than the originals. If you do a search on Team Chevelle you will find more information about these caps.
Here is what you need for a 67 or a 68. 65 and 65 used a round cap.

Originals mention the use of automatic transmission fluid rather than power steering fluid.
R67 Apr 26th, 09, 11:10 AM Is there some place I can go to see what the remote reservoir looks like? We have a big block 396 original engine. We are trying to get it as close to original as possible(with what should be there). Thanks for your help! I am a novice at all this and you guys are pros. Penny
R67 Apr 26th, 09, 11:12 AM The engine and rear end does match with the numbers. That's why we are trying to find the "correct" type of reservoir. I do appreciate your input and am always ready to listen and search for what I need. Thanks!!! Penny
AZCamino Apr 26th, 09, 11:31 AM Penny,
Here is a setup that sold last month (Bill got a good deal on this), and has very good photos showing what is needed. The only problem for you is that this is mostly correct for a 66. The cap is correct for a 67 or 68, though. The reservoir for a 67 would have shorter arms going to the fender bracket, and the fender bracket would be different for a 67. The engine brackets and pump are correct for 66 through 68. The only missing item is the actual steering box and arm.

R67 Apr 26th, 09, 11:48 AM Thanks a bunch.
james a larson Apr 26th, 09, 3:19 PM Do you mean the engine has the correct casting #'s for a 67 and the rear axel assembly has the correct casting #'s? Or do you mean casting #'s, casting dates, and assembly codes, and vin's? All four should be correct to be considered matching numbers.
I believe they all match, but to be sure, how do we tell? I believe it goes off the vin#? We got a book and it told us what should correspond and we found the numbers. Can you enlighten me some more? We want to be absolutely sure. Thanks!
james a larson Apr 27th, 09, 8:31 AM If you would post all the information from the cowl tag, that would tell some of the information. Then start with the assembly code and vin off the front passenger side pad of the block. Then the casting number and date code from the block along with casting numbers and date codes from the heads and intake. The rear axel has an assembly code on the passenger side axel (usually front side, something like CI 10 12 B), and a date code (like C 12 7) and a casting number on the carrier housing (like 38.....). Then the casting numbers and date codes off the transmission. The Vin, axel code, and trans code should match your POP.
