It did mean something at assembly time, it's just that nobody I know of yet knows just what. I assume it's a Baltimore tag? I have samples of numerous plant's tags and in my Baltimore set there are tags with 1, 2, 4, or 5 on them - most in the lower right corner. Speculation has run from shift number, shell carrier (that drops the body on the chassis) to inspector number. On all my Baltimore tags, this number is a raised number just like the rest of the tag. On many Atlanta tags, it's a number stamped on the tag apparently after the tag was affixed to the body and numbers are mixed with 8, 12, and 15 (and some with no numbers).
