protect-o-plate was attached to the original operators manual they put in the glove box. I think that all gm cars had them.

Actually the Protecto-O-Plate was attached to the warranty booklet and that was its purpose. To ID the vehicle and the owner for use by the service dept. It provided info for tracking of parts failure and verification of warranty eligibility etc. It was a aluminum plate stamped with the data by an addressograph macnine. The service dept then ran this POP thru like a credit card and this is what it looked like printed out.

Nice thing about having the POP is it identifies the factory installed engine, transmission, and rear end with all the proper date and suffix code.

I second the POP being attached to warranty card. At least that is what mine is on my 70 El Camino SS 396.

Your right, warranty book not owners manual. Memeory is the first thing to go and I can't remember the second.
The front cover on mine says:
CHEVROLET
Owner Protection Plan
and new vehicle
warranty

Please Keep In
Glove Compartment

I was wondering what a pop was
I have never got one with any of my chevelles
since most of them were ready for the bone yard before I would give them their second chance at life
my convertable was sitting in a barn completely stripped with most the parts in a van sitting next to it
and my ss was a drag car
always heard of the pop but never saw one

The dealers put the owners name and address on them with embossed plastic tape. So its likely the when owners traded or sold the cars, they kept them.

Also, back then the warranty was only 12 months/12,000 miles so I am sure it was pointless for many to hang on to it after warranty period was over. I had 3 new cars (66, 70 and 72 SS's) that would have come with P-O-P and darn if I can recall ever seeing one back then.
