Hello all! I recently found out that my engine block, which was previously thought to be a 396, is actually a 402 (always a nice surprise!). I've got the "3969854" and "T0415CLB" codes figured out; however, I can't seem to figure out this code, 11D167603, found near the "T0415CLB" code. I'm assuming it's a VIN number, but I'm still unable to decipher it. Please help!

1 ~ Chevrolet
1 ~ 1971 (year)
D ~ Final assembly plant but "D" doesn't ring a bell offhand - at least not for Chevelles. 1971 Chevelles were built in Arlington (R), Baltimore (B), Kansas City (K), Van Nuys (L), and Oshawa (1). Possibly you misread the letter?
167603 ~ last six digits of VIN of the original car.
The CLB suffix code is correct for Chevelles. In 71 and 72 it's listed for the 402 w/TH400 LS3; 71 rates it at 300hp while 72 rates it at 240hp.

Hmm...I'm 75% sure that's a "D". Now it's difficult to tell because of the block is so dirty, so it's very possible that I mis-read it. The closet thing is a "B", so it could be that one. Now are those last numbers just a production numbers in a series or do they contain what kind of Chevelle the engine went into?

I have one source that shows CLB was also used for Impala and Camaro LS-3 71-72.
0415 is April 15th engine assembly date.It may be possible they started using the 72 code a little early?
D is Doraville, GA plant where Impala's were made in 71.

Looks like shooter has some data on the engine, I only have Chevelle info but if the letter is a "D" it looks like an engine from an Impala.
The last six digits of the VIN (167603) is the sequential production order for Chevelles from that particular plant. In 1971 the numbering started with unit number 100001, so yours was the 67,603rd Chevelle (of all Chevelle models be it wagons, base Chevelle, Malibu, etc.) from that particular assembly plant.

"I have one source that shows CLB was also used for Impala and Camaro LS-3 71-72."
Also found in the 71-72 Monte Carlos. I have one in a 71 with the protecto plate to confirm it and its a 300 hp. Also sports the chrome valve covers.

Monte Carlo's as well as El Camino's were part of the Chevelle model lineup, series 13000. So when you find information that says Chevelle you have to figure in they are also including the ELC and Monte in those. All came off the same assembly lines intermingled with each other. Not all plants building the Chevelle model did necessarily build the Monte or El Camino. Those vehicle were not produced in the same amount as the basic Chevelle models such as sedan, couple and convertibles so Chevrolet did not tool up all the plants to make them.
