I am in the process of cleaning the paint off my date correct TH400 tranny when I noticed a stamped (appears to be a rubber type stamp) 5 CF in the 1 o clock position on the bellhousing. I know the CF is the code for my 402(396)/350 hp el camino but what is the 5 for???? The number 5 is about 1" tall and the CF is about 2" tall. The assembly date on the alluminum tag shows that it was built in either late Jan or early Feb if I remember right for a 1970 model car. Has anyone else ever seen this type of stamping? I will try to take a digital pic of it tomorrow for everyone to see. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Brian,
I have a 1970 CF Turbo 400 in my shop that is stamped with a 9 and CF in green. I also have no clue what the number stamp is for. I see these quite often and are different colors with different numbers.

CF is the broadcast code btw and found in Box 28

The 9 must have meant something to Hydramatic Division.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I see these stamps all the time and know that the letter code denoted the trans application but it is the number code I am unsure about. I have seen many CF coded transmissions but with different colored stamps and different numbers above them.

Rick, this is the first trans in the 3 TH400 trannys I have right now that has had this rubber stamped mark. I was just curious as I have never seen it before.

I don't see it on every trans but more often then not. Same goes for the (as an example) WO stamp on the M-22. Not all but most. Keep in mind, these stamps come right off with any amount of solvent so they could easily disapear. I can usually find a 'shadow' where one was originally even though there is no trace of it remaining.
