Had this happen to my Elco years ago. Went to my body guy. We pulled the seat, wet the carpet and I had a towel on my door that I was soaking with a hose while he torched it to break the broken latch that was keeping it shut.

If it's that white plastic piece that is broken and jambed the mechanism, I've heard of people drilling out the latch from the inside.

same thing happened on my 69 camaro. i was lucky that i used vel-cro on my door panels, was able to take it off then get inside door with a small cut off tool ( air grinder) and cut the latch off the jamb bolt. kind off a tight area, but take your time it will work out fine. i was going to go the torch way, glad this worked instead. also don't forget to replace other side with new latch incase it decides to fail. good luck with your project, chuck

Check to see if your lock is working, it will not let the latch operate if it is locked. Lock and unlock several times and make sure you can hear it click. Also check the part that contacts the outside button to make sure it is not stuck. Take pb blaster and soak the latch while working the lock and then the inside handle.

This post shows how you may be able to remove the striker from inside the door and open it- http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265823

The passenger door on my 1969 Malibu was shut solid and the lock pull would not release. After rolling down front & rear windows I managed to get some oil down the gap at the rear of the door where the window seal is. While I worked over other stuff, like the stuck rear brake drum (heat, lotsa heat!) I let it soak. Throughout the day I worked the lock pull, and it finally gave way. Yay! But the door was still stuck like a vault! Worked the door handle, inside and out many times, finally took a stick and jammed the inside door release handle in the up position then climbed into the back seat and kicked the door at the rear edge. (drape a towel over the panel) It finally gave way after 4 good kicks!! Sprayed the mech. with more penetrating oil and it works fine now.
Got both rusted tight problems fixed!! Great way to spend a Sunday.
