Well i was going to the lady friends house today. car was running great no problems then bam going through a little town and a dig runs out in front of me no time to stop or swerve and bump bump dog died instantly which the owner was glad about that but i popped a pretty big hole in the radiator and dented in the bumper so that was a plus. the dogs owner said she would buy me a new radiator but when i went to look at a new one i found out they were like $350. that made me feel pretty bad because i just killed their dog and now they want to buy me a new radiator which is $350. its outrageously priced in my book but i guess it is a new radiator and not a used one. well i figured i would get this little dilema out in the air and vent some.

Weeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllll....

It's unfortunate that the dog died, but it wasn't on a leash and not in a fenced in yard. If that makes you feel any better.

I ran over a dog once, same thing happened, but I was going down a back country road and the dog came running out of the yard. I didn't have time to stop and nowhere to go and I ran over it. The dog didn't die on the spot but the owner did come out when I turned around and went back. He told me not to worry about it, picked the dog up and walked off. I was in my '77 Monte Carlo and it wasn't damaged in the least.

Tell her that you'll throw in a $100 to ease the cost...?

I can totally understand that and it's respectable what you are doing. I think you are doing the honorable thing.

But, what if you can't find a used one?

Was it your chevelle?

If so, try and locate one of those chevy van radiators, they can be had pretty inexpensively and do a great job in a chevelle.

yes unfortunately it was in the chevelle :( but what better car than that if it was the geo or capri there would have been much more damage than a radiator

Split the difference with her. Tell her how much a new one is and say because you feel for her loss of her dog you are willing to take half.:)
If that will make you feel better about the situation, but it was her fault for the dog running loose. Her offering is surprising. Around here you hit a dog the owner trys to shake YOU down or sues you for the dog!

Actually something I have done before when a young girl that had just got her license backed into my car.(daily driver/work car) I quick called the salvage yard and priced a fender and told the girls mom if she would pay half it don't have to go to the insurance. She went in the store and got the cash at the ATM and was very thankful!
I scouted around a little and found a fender that wound up only costing me 5 bucks more than she gave me.

Just to add, we were both backing out of spaces but I had started out before her. If my car was just parked and she backed into it I might have looked at it differently.

Try www.Radiator.com Not knowing what year your car is I used 68 and a small block and they quoted 200-299 delivered. $350 seems way out of line for a stock replacement. You could also probably have a local radiator shop repair it for less (recore). Its nice of you to be considerate of the dog owner. Even when fenced or on a leash they can get out once in awhile. Home owner policy might cover the damage. I hit a cow once of a neighbors (just knocked him down) and the $1100 damage to my burb was paid by their insurance.
