I have an opportunity to buy a 396 but want to know as much about it as possible.

The block must have been decked inasmuch as the code on the front is almost gone. The only letters I can make out are TO which I understand is where it was built.

The number at the rear is 3935440 which I understand is a 68-69 model. It also has stamped on it Pass Hi Pro and AZ, don't know what these mean.

The heads are 3935401 which says it is a 68 427 head? Is this good or bad. The head also has F38 and GM2T stamped on it. Don't know what this means either.

It is obvious that the engine has been rebuilt as some point, but don't know how much. The son of my friend is the one selling it, I am trying to find out from him.

Can anyone decifer any more information or have any insight into this motor and heads. Would appreciate any light you can shine on this.

Thanks

The oval port heads look like they came off of a 1968 tall deck 427 truck engine. Casting date F 3 8 decodes to June 3, 1968. I don't know of anyone ever using these nor do I have any experience with them myself. Sorry!
