Got nailed by a rock the other day, and it took out a sizable chunk of paint on the lip of the hood, between the letters. It's obvious there was some adhesion problems, because there's a pea-sized circle gone, right down to bare metal. There's evidence of a filler skim coat (that didn't stick) and pretty thick paint film.
I'm not in the position to have the whole dang hood reworked/repainted this season. I'd like to just spot repair the damage. Can you gurus recommend a home-doable method?

Yikes...
Do you have the paint code? If so, I would have a spray can of lacquer made up at the paint shop. Then, I'd use some glaze and fill the chip. Sand it smooth and lay a few coats of the lacquer. Cut and buff as needed. Take the emblems off when you do this.
Unfortunately it probably will not match 100% perfectly, but it surely would be much better than that big chip.

Ouch! Looks the same as the door chip I had.Body shop supply place took a pic of my paint and then mixed up a pint. I repaired the chip with glazing putty then airbrushed the paint on then wetsanded and polished. Took me awhile but it turned out pretty descent.Hope this helps

I have some experiance in this area.... Just tape the EXACT area off, then lay in a little spot putty, then brush some base coat on it( it will take a few coats) then you can BRUSH on some clear, wetsand, then buff.......It won't be as good as spraying the whole hood, but it will look a whole lot better then it does..

Car looks black. If that's the case, just brush touch it with black paint.

Well if NASA had thermal imaging turned on over MN that day, there would've been a spot as hot as the sun near Minneapolis! Man was I mad! But, it's the price you pay for driving your car!
Yup, the car is black. I'm almost wishing that the darn rock had taken out the windshield, or at least clobbered the "E" or the "V"... I've got spares of those! (and no paintwork needed!)

Black is easy. just brush touch and wet sand. you won't even notice the repair when done.
