: New Challenger vs Old Challenger
At the local cruise Fri night I saw old and new ('70) parked next to each other. The new one was HUGE and dwarfed the old one, which to me was much better proportioned and just better looking overall. The new one looked like a bloated carcass IMO. I'm looking forward to seeing a new Camaro next to a '69. I'm sure the new Camaro will be larger than the old but it's smaller than the Challenger.
69XF Apr 20th, 09, 9:55 AM the new Camaro is ugly to me. :(
furball8994 Apr 20th, 09, 10:00 AM Actually the New Camaro is very close to the 69. Size wise.
Old..............................New
Length, 186"...............190.4"
Width, 74"..................75.5"
Height, 51.1"...............54.2"
Wheelbase, 108"..........112.3"
Curb Weight, 3435lb.....3913lb
grandsport Apr 20th, 09, 10:02 AM If I didn't love the 70 Chevelle so much,I would have bought a challenger.
PaPa Johns 77 Apr 20th, 09, 10:13 AM I really like the new Challenger! But I love the old Challenger!:D
I don't compare the two. They are two different beasts from two different eras and should be looked at that way!:)
mdd71 Apr 20th, 09, 10:22 AM I sat in a new Camaro on Saturday in Charleston SC. It does appear to be larger or bulkier than than 67-69s, but in reality is not much bigger when you compare the dimensions. The only thing I did not like about the new Camaro was the appearance of the drivers side dashboard. I looked too large.
mmurphy77 Apr 20th, 09, 10:44 AM I saw a V-6 Challenger on the road yesterday for the first time and it still looked good to me (except for the single exhaust).
Derek69SS Apr 20th, 09, 10:53 AM I don't compare the two. They are two different beasts from two different eras and should be looked at that way!:)
Then why do you insist the new Camaro needs to look like an old one? :p
1ATony Apr 20th, 09, 11:09 AM I like the new Challenger.I think they did a good job designing it.
72 malibu Apr 20th, 09, 11:35 AM I like the old one better, for reasons stated in the orig. post.I would like a new one, but if I had the coin for a new one, I would probably look at a '70-1 R/T first, I know I would.
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Apr 20th, 09, 11:46 AM All I know is I am seeing those new Challengers everywhere and every day... must be selling well!!
I kind of like it.. I mean, seeing one on the road is still better than seeing a Camry next to me :)

I agree! Lots of people are always complaining because the Big Three aren't producing exciting performance cars anymore, and now that they do, they're still complaining! I happen to very much like the looks of the new Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers and glad they'll be everywhere soon.
SebJr Apr 20th, 09, 12:40 PM I too saw the Challengers side by side at the Pavillions in Scottsdale last summer, I'll say this...if I owned a new one , I wouldn't park it next to an old one.:noway:;)
MEJ1990TM Apr 20th, 09, 12:51 PM The '70 Challenger is my 3rd favorite car. Can't go wrong with a 440 Magnum and a 4 gear.
Cameano Apr 20th, 09, 1:19 PM We had three lined up at a show last month. A '70 440 six pack, a new R/T, and another '70 with a new 6.1l crate hemi. I'd get rid of the cyborg style single reverse light on the new one. Split it up into two with a new panel, move them to the sides.

in the car world, that much of a difference is the difference between a compact car and a midsize car.
how does the new Camaro compare to the last Camaro from 2002?
regarding the Challenger- the new one is a boat. i've seen one parked next to a new Shelby Mustang at a car lot, and it looked huge. i don't know how they can claim that it is in the same class as the Mustang- it's more comparable to the 04-06 GTO than it is to a Mustang or Camaro. actually, i don't know where the Camaro fits in, as i haven't seen one parked next to a Mustang or Challenger yet. i'm thinking it would be right in between the two, size wise.
PaPa Johns 77 Apr 20th, 09, 1:26 PM Then why do you insist the new Camaro needs to look like an old one? :p
Because it does!
The new Challenger does resemble the old, front and rear!
The Camaro on the otherhand is ugly and unlike the old in the rear and the damn grill looks like a cartoon car grinnin' at you, slant eyes and all!

chevelledude71 Apr 20th, 09, 1:47 PM There are a buttload of new Mustangs and Challengers around these parts. I suspect that once the next batch of returning Marines gets here, the new Camaro will be roaming the streets as well. :)
I LOVE IT.
Thomas_Mac Apr 20th, 09, 1:57 PM I'm looking forward to seeing a new Camaro next to a '69. I'm sure the new Camaro will be larger than the old but it's smaller than the Challenger.

I sat in a new Challenger at the new car show this year, and I was also struck by it's size. I've seen them plenty of times but the actual size of the new one never really hit me until I sat in one. I can't think of any new passenger car that I cannot reach across the seat and touch the passenger door, except the new Challenger. Maybe the designers were thinking the same this as I was, remember when cars were so big that you couldn't reach the passenger side door from the driver seat? I don't know but that's the first thing that hit my brain.
I never had a Challenger growing up, but I do remember them having small back seats. I'm sure all the "fun" happend up front, so maybe they wanted to keep it that way? Okay, maybe not.
dyno jonn Apr 20th, 09, 2:22 PM The new Challengers are hugh. There was a new Challenger stored in the showroom of a friends used car dealership this winter along with his 69 Camaro. The Challenger was near a foot taller than the Camaro.

The Challenger is a modified and reskinned Charger, which isn't a small car. Kinda looks like a '70 Challenger on a beer and pizza diet IMO.:)
Keith Tedford Apr 20th, 09, 3:40 PM No matter what people think of the look, one pass through the gears with 426 net hp is going to put a smile on your face. It will probably change how you look at the car too. The Australian GTO was just too far from the muscle car look that we are used to. The Camaro still looks very muscular. Now, if GM survives, they should come out with a COPO version with the C5R 427. I could definitely get interested in that. ;)
ak 67SD Apr 20th, 09, 3:57 PM I do like the new challenger, but agree its a big car, and is alot bigger than the original, but it did stay close to its styling roots... I like the new camaro, but it sure doesnt carry any styling cues forward from the original. But I give GM credit for not just trying to copy the old styling. I also like the new mustang, i think they did a nice job styling that car, better scale than the challenger...

HighSchool70SS Apr 20th, 09, 8:06 PM I think the old and new challengers are ugly.
ss300deluxe Apr 20th, 09, 9:54 PM I have to agree that the proportions of an old challenger look better overall. I wonder which one would be cheaper to get though, the old or the new.
L7870_cortez Apr 21st, 09, 12:06 AM I waited four months to get my New Challenger,Black, Hemi,6 Speed and 20inch Chrome Clad Wheels. It is a little tall, but Drives and Rides like a Refined Musclecar. 30 Years ago I had a 70 R/T Se 440-6 Pak, but then I did not car about comfort.

And to me, the passenger side dashboard is just plain lacking in immagination. It is pretty,uh, in need of a re-do.
I have been critical of the car, but it is growing on me.

That is actually well said.
ZZ69chevelle Apr 21st, 09, 2:13 AM I hated the 4th gens when they showed up. Driving one changed my opinion and the style grew on me. I have two of them now and don't know what it was I didn't like. Just change I guess. Nothing stays the same and 1969, 79, 89, 99 are long gone. I'm glad they still offer something.
Trukcrazy Apr 21st, 09, 8:20 AM We own a new SRT8 Challenger and love it. It is a great car. We were going to wait for the Camaro, but the final styling didn't agree with us. There will be a lot of them on the road and I am just glad that we all have these cars to choose from.

Very, very nice, I like that Orange one next to yours too. I have a black '08 GT w/Chrome wheels. The wheels are easy to clean, but trying to keep that black spotless is...TIRELESS. :)
mmurphy77 Apr 21st, 09, 12:14 PM I think people are crazy or in denial if they can't see the styling cues of the 1st gen Camaros in the new Camaro. Of course it's not going to look like a restored 1st Gen but instead pays Homage to it which I think it does well.

Except for the pointy nose with smiley grill and the rounded rear end! They rest they got right!
But what do I know, I'n negative about everything these days!:)

how would you feel about the drivetrain and suspension from the new Camaro being put under that 69?
rianbechtold Apr 22nd, 09, 2:03 PM The "auto mall" near me has a ford, dodge, and chevy dealership next to eachother. On monday, they parked a shelby mustang, ss camaro, and challenger srt8 next to eachother. All I can say is that when parked next to eachother, the challenger looks right at home, not too bloated at all! They are all nice cars:yes:

JohnLadd Apr 22nd, 09, 11:52 PM I second VON's sentiments. I was shocked when I saw the new Challenger in person. It is ENORMOUS! Can't imagine what they were thinking. Very strange. It's kind of Hummeresque, if that's a word.
davis95 Apr 23rd, 09, 12:04 AM I saw a V-6 Challenger on the road yesterday for the first time and it still looked good to me (except for the single exhaust).
V-6 should not even be available in the Challenger.
ejrempel Apr 23rd, 09, 12:32 AM I think the Camaro's v6 is a double overhead cammer. Is that right? If so, a couple of turbos and you have an exotic that would do about 180 mph.
