I'd say the steering wheel could be factory ordered on a base Chevelle. It's also possible that some previous owner replaced the factory wheel with the woodgrain optioned wheel. Aftermarket mfg's catalogs will generally give a 'generic' description of an item based on the more popular models. The steering wheel was probably also available on the SS in 1968 and it's not a Malibu model either (135xx/136xx) but rather a Super Sport model (138xx).

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was standard on Malibus & SS396 models. It was also optional for 300 & 300 Deluxe models at modest extra cost as RPO N30 - Deluxe Steering Wheel. N30 was offered on 1967 & 1968 Chevelles, although the styles were different.
The car that followed mine down the assembly line was a '67 300 2-door post with nothing but a 250, Powerglide, wheel covers, whitewalls and the N30 Deluxe Steering Wheel. No radio on the thing either.
