Building a 496 getting ready for the oil pump. Does anyone suggest a high volume or high pressure or both. Thanks JP

I use a high volume pump (M77HV) then I run the low or regular pressure spring. Most of the pumps have the high pressure spring installed and come with the other spring.

you don't need that thing, it won't fix anything or help anything. Use the regular pump with the high pressure relief spring that's included. Just like Chevy did with the LS-7, LS-6, L-88, 396/375, etc etc.

I thought the LS-7 used a high-volume pump?

Am I wrong?

I believe you are correct. LS7 pump has 1.3" pump gears and the LS6 has 1.1" pump gears.

the l88 and ls7's had slightly more volume but not as much as the astermarket high volime units;i forget the gear length. do like tom said. it works

All depends on what your doing with motor and clearances, but i take it your all talking about stock motors? oem pumps or replacments work just fine with alot of abuse. Same in sbc appl. People get info mixed up and have to ask.

as long as the clearances in the engine stay reasonable then the stock pump is the way to go. my 454 in my street chevelle has 40 psi hot with the stock pump at idle in gear.my race car has 25 lbs hot idle in gear and 70 psi wide open with the stock pump w/ pressure balance grooves and .0028 of main and rod clearance. so unless you have too much clearance or just like a bunch of idle oil pressure and lots of oil bypassed to the pan then get a stock volume pump

This is going to be a street machine. I wont run it over 6500 rpms and I think I am going to end up around 600 hp. What is the suggestion for a motor like this? JP

As long as your tolerances are as wolfplace says " not big enough to drive a truck through". A stock style pump with the high pressure relief spring is all you need. High volume and/or high pressure pumps have no real relevance to anything more than supplying oil to a hole. Depending on how big that hole is, determines what you need. As long as you are within normal specs, go with a standard pump.

My builder suggested a stock pump with high pressure. He said that in a standard stock pan the high volume pump can drain the pan dry in a hurry. Is this the correct thinking with my set up? JP

A high volume pump will not 'suck the pan dry'. The oil flowing through the system from a regular pump at 50psi is the same as the flow from a HV pump at 50 psi. An HV pump will heat the oil more than a regular pump due to the flow through relief valve.
