Hi, I could use a little help decoding the #'s on this trans. It is a 400 turbo. The #'s I found are on a tag on the right side of trans. On the top right side it has 322, On bottom side left it has 71CD, on bottom right side it has 1937. I have done a search and found that the 322 is the day of the year, 71 being the year, C being chev, but could not find what the others meant. where would the ser. # be on an auto. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thats a TH400 used on a 1971 Chevelle & Monte Carlo with a 400 engine.
The D is that application code.
The Serial no. is #1937.

Thanks mr70. The car it is in is a 71 chevelle with a 402 but the ser. # is not 1937. The motor is a ser # matching to the car. It is all original but Carb and intake. It is not an ss but a 402 with 400 turbo, 12 bolt and F41. Is there any where else that might have a ser # stamped? Thanks again

Nelson,
I think the serial number that Rick is referring to is not related to the serial number (aka VIN) of the car. Try looking on a small machined pad on the drivers side of the trans, just above the pan.

Yes,the Transmission has it's very own seperate serial number. Thus the #1937.
If you are looking for a matching VIN Number to connect it with a Vehicle, look for a recessed Machined Horizontal pad on the drivers side of the trans.
Look above the pan lip,and just behind the rubber boot, covering the connecting shifter linkage. It usually helps to see it,if you wipe out the caked on dirt that accumulates on it.
