First of all, the SS was not a model in 1970, it was just an option on the Malibu. So its a Malibu with SS option.

Z15 - SS 454
Z25 - SS396
ZL3 - SS Conversion

Look for 1 or 2 of these codes on the build sheet as there are all SS codes.

Make sure the VIN Number on the build match's the car, also make sure the body number match's the car and everything else on the body tag match's.

If the seller didn't know the difference and said SS optioned cars had Malibu build sheets, even though he is correct as stated above, doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing.

The last 6 numbers of the VIN plate should be stamped once or twice on the build sheet, upper left and or upper right, and in a different font than the rest of the sheet. The numbers after the assembly plant on the firewall body tag should match the body number on the sheet. Depending on where the car was built, other numbers on the body tag should match numbers in block 24 on the sheet.

If you can post (or send me) a good, clear photo of the body tag and build sheet, we can confirm its status.
