Hi, today i was working with my fuse box and rewired my hei wire to the ign on the fuse box. Now my motor wont turn over or even click, everything else works. I have moved thr hei wire 3 times but nothing. would no power in the hei wire cause a no click condition. If not any suggestions on what to check next. Thanks , Its a 69 chevelle

Obvious, but I have to ask:
Is it in Park or Neutral (auto trans)?
- Did you accidentally knock the neutral safety switch wiring, or the switch loose?
- Many times the "NSS" is bypassed (dumb idea btw...) and a jumper wire jammed into the terminals... did this jumper get knocked out?

Hi, i jaust checked starter and has power from the battery but no power at solenoid. With or without key. Could this be caused by the hei 12v wire or should i look else where. thanks

Its a 4 speed and the safety switch works and i bypassed it to make sure that wasn't the problem.

I would double and triple check the connections you replaced before you dig into another part of the wiring.
I know many times where I left one small piece off and it totally screwed everything up.
Double check you have your battery cable on nice and tight and that you have some juice in it. (could it have went dead while you were working on something? left the door open while you were working on something with it connected?
I am not familiar with the HEI as my elco still has breaker points, so those are the things I would check first.
Also, if it is anything like a 72 ignition switch it is mounted on the top of the steering column below the dash.
the bracket has oblong holes so you can adjust the ignition switch and when the key engages the starter.
Mine wouldnt start (no click or anything) untill I adjusted the assembly closer to the steering wheel, then the rod was able to complete the connection and start it.
maybe some of this will help

You're barking up the wrong tree, the HEI has absolutely nothing to do with the starter operation.
The purple wire from the neutral safety switch (or clutch switch) sends 12 volts to the solenoid "S" terminal to make the starter work.

You are saying the car would turn over without power to the hei, but just not fire. I am going out to check the safety switches. thanks

The starter would crank the motor over even if the distributor wasn't installed.

I have power on both sides of switch. I jumped it also but nothing. The purple wire goes up in dash , where does it come out in engine compartment / thanks

It ended up that when i unsrewed the fuse box the back of the box on the firewall came loose and wasn't sending power to the starter. Replacing the hei wire at the same time just sent me in the wrong direction. thanks for straightening me out.
