I have a 70 Chevelle convertible with a non-original engine. It is (I beleive)a 400 small block. The code above is stamped on the front passenger side of the engine. Would anyone be able to help me determine the year of this engine or to verify that it is a 400 small block?
Thanks much,
Gerry

In reading the other e-mails, I'd like to add the following numbers:
880817-block casting number
Q274- Block casting date

It looks like it is a 74, right?

Thanks again,
Gerry

330817 was used 72-80 for a 400 block

T=Tonawanda engine plant
0808=Aug 8th engine assembly date
CTY=1976 Impala 400/175hp LT-4

Check for a partial vin number stamped on the same pad. That wlll verify year.
The normal format is 16D+sequence number.
1 is Chevrolet
6 is 1976 model year
D is one example of a Impala car assembly plant.

I suppose it is possible to have a late 74 cast block assembled in Aug 75 which is a 76 model production month.

Pretty interesting. This car has undergone some interesting changes in that it is really easy to light up the tires. The battery is in the trunk and it appears that this car was raced in the past. I guess the 400 block has been worked over pretty good. In any case, I appreciate the help shooter.
Thanks,
Gerry
