: 68 Malibu Engine Code Question

Hi, I have a 68 Malibu, with the original 327 engine. The code on it is EI, which in my book "Catalog of Chevelle, Malibu, & El Camino ID numbers 64-87" decodes to a 275hp w/ PG + 4bbl, which all works out to what I have.
When I looked on the Team Chevelle site, it listed the EI as 250hp though, and an EH? as 275hp. Whereas in the book the EH is listed as 250hp.
Other websites, http://www.67camaro.net/bynumbers/1955-68.htm list "EH" as a '57 265ci or '59 283ci  .
Maybe the book is wrong, and after searching a few other websites the same EI seems to be rated at 250hp for Chevelle and 275 for El Camino.

I was just wondering what was the difference in the Chevelle vs. El Camino engine to be rated w/ a 25hp difference like that? And also why the difference in information for the EH code?

I had thought for a long time, I've owned the book since the mid-90's, that my engine was 275hp. Was a little shocked to find out its only 250, but no big deal, I love her anyways smile.gif .

EH - 327-250 HP manual trans RPO L73, 4-bbl carb, A.I.R.
EI - 327-250 HP power-glide trans RPO L73 40-bbl carb

I checked 3 different sources and all gave 250 HP for EH and EI. A.I.R. is for air injector reactor, CA pollution equipment where there is a pump that pumps air into the exhaust manifold by the way of tubes.

My info shows EE to be a 327-275 HP engine. I don't' know what is right, maybe some 1968 Chevelle literature might help. All I have is a 1968 Full size car brochure and it shows both a 250 and 275 327 available

I wouldn't trust half of the *...by the numbers...* books out there. Many reguritate the same misinformation. Sometimes you can't even trust GMs own publications. My 68 *Restoration Kit* doesn't even show the L73 in its *Serial Numbers and Identification* section but show specs (but no suffix codes) for it later on. It does show the L30 ("EE" coded) as a 275hp as opposed to the L73s 250hp - due in part to a difference of compression ratios: 10.0:1 vs 8.75:1.

My information source shows the same thing noted above, except A.I.R. isn't specifically stated on the manual trans L73. There wouldn't be any difference between a Chevelle and an El Camino on the hp ratings of the same engine in the same year. I can't think of any engine available in one not being available in the other...except maybe the 396 in 65.

There may very well be differences in hp ratings between say a Chevelle and a Camaro or a full size Impala with the same basic engine.

Many suffix codes were reused so it's not odd to have a 265 engine from the 50s with the same suffix codes. The "EH" suffix code was also used on a 66 396/325 manual trans, A.I.R., and rochester carb as well as the 67 396/325 heavy duty manual trans and A.I.R.

When I looked on the Team Chevelle site, it listed the EI as 250hp though, and an EH? as 275hp. Whereas in the book the EH is listed as 250hp.I didn't find that about the EH being listed as 275hp here on TC. http://www.chevelles.com/years/68/68codes.html shows EH as 327/250 manual, EI as 327/250 Powerglide, and the EE as 327/275 Powerglide.

On a positive note, look at it this way. It may not have performed as expected as a 275hp engine but look how well it does as a 250hp engine graemlins/thumbsup.gif

lol Thanks Dale =).
And I swear that Team Chevelle listed EH as 275hp for 68.. someone must have changed it on me, or I'm just getting old (turned 30 today) hehe..
