Friday afternoon my Dad went in the hospital. He's been diagnosed with diverticulitis. There was the possibility he was going to need emergency surgery.Currently he's in the hospital for 7-10 days on antibiotics to clear up the infection. They are hoping to send him home on oral antibiotics for a couple weeks and then send him for a colonoscopy, before sending him to surgery to remove the bad portion of intestion. As of today he was feeling a little better, temperature was normal, pain was in a smaller area, and he even went for a walk around the halls. Every day has shown improvement, for which I am greatful. I wish I could skip ahead to after surgery. I don't care if he gripes and complains ,just as long as he's on the road to recovery. I was supposed to be in the shop saturday morning putting in my new body mounts, but that got put on hold in a hurry. As much as I love my chevelle. Dad takes precedence :) So if anyone wouldn't mind please say a prayer for my Dad. Thank you

Thank you to everyone for the prayers and kind words. Dad is doing pretty well, and gets another CT scan tomorrow to determine what's next. The doctor doesn't care for the belly tenderness he's still feeling, but will know whats up after the scan. If all is well he may come home Thursday to rest and heal more before whatever surgery he'll need. Keep the prayers coming and again Thank you everyone.

Friday afternoon my Dad went in the hospital. He's been diagnosed with diverticulitis...They are hoping to send him home on oral antibiotics for a couple weeks...before sending him to surgery.

BigEvilChevelle,

It's very atypical for a doctor to suggest surgery because of one episode of diverticulitis.
Is there some complication other than just the diverticulitis, such as an abscess, etc?

Unless the diverticulitis is recurrent, most doctors are conservative in their treatment (antibiotics, etc.) and forgo surgery.

If it was my dad, and this was his first occurrence of diverticulitis, and there are no other complications, I'd get a second opinion from a gastroenterologist before sending him to the OR for a major surgery.

Regards,
-Greg

They were really concerned because, Dad first had symptoms about 3 weeks ago,but like alot of us men, he's stubborn and ignored it and the symptoms decreased. On Friday it hit him hard and they were pretty sure it had perforated and was poisoning his system, They knew infection was present, hence the 7-10 days on intervenious antibiotics. They opted not operate unless it was urgent, so not to spread the infection and make things far worse. The surgeon who is said to be one of the best, had said on Friday he didn't want to operate,he mentioned the possibiliy that it might seal itself.
His partners checked in on Dad over the weekend, and said after the infection is gone and Dad has a colonoscopy, surgery was likely. Today the doctor was back in to see him and said that a pouch may be holding fluid and that could be why he's still tender and they may have to draw the fluid out with a needle. The Doc really wants to hold of on any surgery unless theres a problem. The next step or planning for surgery, will be based on the two CT scans they will do in the morning.

More love and good wishes coming your way from the Midwest. He'll be fine. Funny thing, us guys are fine until something is happening to our Dad. I guess that just speaks to how important to us they are. And yes, to echo everyone else, he'll be fine soon enough.

I had the exact condition. I was in the hospital for 7 days on antibiotics, home for 6 days still on antibiotics and back for surgery where I spent another 8 days. Sounds like your Dad responded to the meds and is "out of the woods" as far as the threat of a rupture is concerned. I was under the threat of emergency surgery as well but responded well to the meds and avoided it. While I was in the hospital, a U.S. Senator died from the exact same condition.
If they do lyposcopy (sp?) the surgery is not bad. If they do it traditionally, as they did me, he is in for some VERY TOUGH surgery and recovery. It was 12 weeks before I could even think about getting in and out of my Firebird, 6 months before I was in any danger of cutting the lawn with my push mower or lifting anything heavy and about a year before I stopped feeling the effects from the surgery.
Abdominal surgery is tough to recover from but my Doctor said he did not trust stitching a perfectly leak free repair looking through a microscope...he wanted to have his hands on it! Since he was touted as one of the best at Emory in Atlanta, I agreed to the more invasive procedure.
If he has tradational surgery, make sure he discusses with his doctor how he wears his pants and where they fall on his waist. My doctor managed to end my incision exactly where the button for my jeans are. It is a constant irritation even 6 years after surgery. 1 inch one way or the other would have worked well!
Tom

My prayers are with your father during this tough time.
Tom

UPDATE:
Dad's CT scans still shows inflammation, but labs are good and the air or bloating in his abdomin is getting less,so they like th direction he's headed in. today they will start him on clear food items like clear jello and soup broth. He'll stay on the antibiotics through the weekend. Now they are shooting for sending him home next week to mend and then he can look into having the surgery. The Doctor has exspressed that he wants Dad to lose some weight so they can do the orthoscopic surgery, rather than the long incision. Dad exspressed to the Doc that he looks like he hasn't missed many meals himself, lol. It makes me happy to see my Dad playfully giving the staff a hard time. I think they enjoy the comic relief aswell. I'll keep ya'll posted and thank you for the continued prayers.

UPDATE:
Dad has been bored silly walking around the floor he's on,and feeling much improved. The doctor likes the way things are looking, but doesn't think Dad would fair well with another occurence like he came in with. So, he's going in for surgery on Monday.
We're still eager to just get him home and on the mend. Keep the prayers comin' :)

UPDATE:
Dad's condition has improved and he was released today. The Doctor wants to do a follow up in two weeks, and a colonoscopy in a month or so. As long as there is no emergencies, surgery will be anywhere from 1-3 months. I'm still anxious to get him past the surgery.
