First off I want to say thanks for this site and the people who come here. I have learned alot just from reading the postings. I tore apart my rearend ( 8.2 10 bolt ) after the axle came out going up an on ramp on the free way. I am so glad I was'nt going fast. The spider gears were all chewed up and one of the side gears just came falling out, along with one of the c- clips being bent and chewed.

I bought a posi unit for $75 and looked up the #'s. Turns out it is a Auburn. Now I heard that they don't sell rebuild kits for these. That's what the local shop told me anyways. I also found out that you can ship them to the company for a rebuild, don't know the cost though. How can you tell if the gears are worn because they are alot better then the ones I pulled out. My 28 spline axles are to small to fit in it. So I figured if I can get some new axles and a bearing and shim kit maybe with some new gears I would be in bussisness. If a 8.2 was set up like that how strong do you think it will be. I won't be running over 500hp or torque. I'm only running about 400 right now. If you want pics let me know. Thank you guys once again.

Thanks Furball that will save me some cash until I can afford that 12 bolt or ford 9".

The rear end will hold up as long as long as your tires dont grab hard.

Traction is what tends to break rear ends, how is your car hooking up now?

When you start building the 8.2 you will find out that for a few hundred more you can get a nicely setup 9" or 12 bolt.
If you look at buying a complete used unit and inspect it well, you will more than likely come out ahead of building up an 8.2.

You can't rebuild the Auburn. When you send it in they replace it, not rebuild it. If your axles wont fit then you probably have a 30 spline unit, which means that it isn't for the 8.2 10 bolt.

thanks for the info. I'll start looking for a 12 or a 9" housing or maybe even a 8.5. I read if built right those can handle a great deal of power as well. Will a 30 spline unit fit into a 8.5 housing?

I would buy another 10 bolt outta craigs for 100 bucks in the mean time or just spend the 4-500 on a 12 bolt now.

tlowe can build you a 12 bolt or I can sell you a new Moser 12 bolt. The 8.5 can be upgraded to 30 splines, but the 8.5 is rare and harder to find that a 12 bolt.
