: Add up my 70LS5?

I realized I have been posting some stuff in restoration corner by mistake.
I am starting the process of getting the right parts, cleaning the ones I have, so on and so forth, to convert my 70LS5 back to "pretty correct" and find another 70 that I can cut apart for all my go-fast parts so I can put a cage in it and not feel bad about wrecking a rare car.
I have GM of Canada documentation for the options and such. I don't have and never found the buildsheet, protecto plate, whatever, just the original owners manual. Its currently painted blue and white, even though it should be green and white, I am not sure how I will address this. I am not intendending to resell the car period, so I might let it slide until the paint gets bad enough to warrant a full repainting. It was built in Canada and sold to a buyer in Massachusetts by Scuncio Chevrolet in RI, apparently a dealership that may have had some high performance ties.

I just want to run my numbers by you guys to see if they make sense for the vehicle before I pay to have the carb, heads and intake cleaned and checked out. I already run the orig block, trans and rear in the car, I still have my original 3.31 ringset although I have 3.90s in the rear at the moment. This is a 5-7 year game plan for me, and I am just keeping my eyes open for the right 70 to grab. Enough with the story..

Starting from the top, trim tag:

70 13637 0S542296
756 4848
1D D55UM1Z15A51
M40

Carb:
Rochester Quadrajet
7040509 with 3226 underneath

Water pump:
(one part)
GM
T
(another part)
12554747

Intake:
(one half)
GMT
3955287
1
(down lower)
K26

Heads:
3964290

block
Pad: T1230CRQ (Dec 30th, 1969?)
Rear of block: L199 (Dec 19, 1969?)

Trans Pad:
330

70-08 1863

Rear End:
CRQ stamp, there may be something else but I didn't feel like jacking the car up again to look for it.

Does this add up?
The things I am most unsure about are the water pump and the carb.

I am going to start farming these parts out to be rebuit, so I want to make sure I am starting with the right stuff here. The manifold and heads I can have done locally, the carb and water pump I am going to send out if they are the right ones. I am glad I have the GM of Canada stuff because I don't have any of the other possible documentation.

thanks for all your help guys!

Matt

Matt you already have all the documentation that you will ever need and it is right there on your cowl tag Z15. There were 299 70 454 LS5 cars built in Canada (mine is in my signature) and your was built right after mine.
Not sure about the #s on your carb or waterpump but the block and intake are certainly correct and you have the same block code as me (December 69). I see your car was originally green with black bucket seat interior.

Good luck with the resto graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Water pump is probably some later model rebuilt unit - numbers are not from the 60's or 70's era.

Everything looks good for your carb except for the date code. '70' is a Rochester carb, '4' designates 1970 - 1975 time frame, '0' narrows it down to 1970 production, '2' is a Quadrajet, '0' is Chevrolet Division, and '9' designates a manual transmission (odd numbers = manual trans, even numbers = automatic). '3226' would be for the 322nd day of either 1966 or 1976. If it was really '3229' that would be for the 322nd day of 1969 - a believable date code for a car made the 4th week of January (01D on your Trim Tag).

'3955287' is a 1970 & 1971 big block intake manifold, so that's good. Again, though, the date code makes no sense. 'K' is the month of November, '2' means the 2nd day of the month, and the third number is the year of manufacture. This manifold was only produced for model years 1970 & 1971, so the '6' is all wrong.

3964290 is a 1970 BBC head, so that's good.

You've got the block decoded correctly.

The trans numbers don't compute for me

Hope that helps a little smile.gif

Thanks for the brain picking, but now time for some more.
What do you mean by the trans #'s don't compute? Can you elaborate a little? Do they ever compute?
also, I have taken the best picture I can (at night anyway) of the intake manifold and the parts of it I managed to scrub off. Whatever grime is caked on there, its is above the orange paint, and really, really, baked on. I am planning to have the intake blasted down and cleaned, and have the heads cleaned up and checked out, but I want to make sure I am paying to clean the right part.
Also-- on the carb, the 6 is def. a 6, unless it was stamped upside down, but all the other numbers are right side up. I found some other numbers on the throttle blades, and other small parts, but I don't know if they would help. If they would, I will be happy to post them.
So here is the picture of the intake manifold, of just the numbers area. I didn't include a big photo of it, which has (under grime) up top the firing order, it is semi-4 hole intake, with what looks like (I am too young to know what it is) a heat-activated bimetal choke adapter connected to the manifold.

Tell me what you think of this, all help is greatly appreciated. The car seems to add up, but at the same time it doesn't.. then again, if I posted a before and after pic of my resto (performance resto), most people who didn't think I was insane would..
