: Strange VIN, can anyone help me decode?
E34M5 Aug 11th, 04, 4:39 PM I recently bought a '66 Chevelle Malibu, but the VIN is strange... :confused:
It's produced by GM in Canada, that's what the VIN plate says...
VIN starts with a "6".. :
613617000752
6 = ??
1 = Chevrolet (Correct)
36 = Malibu, V8 (Correct)
17 = 2-door sport coupe (Correct)
0 = 1970 model (NOT correct)
00752 = ?
The car was originally sold and registered in Norway in 1966, so it can't be a 1970...???
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance! The Canadian VINs are different in at least 66, maybe Mike Crown can pop in here and confirm.
6= I think it means the year of manu.
0= Would probably mean Oshawa assembly.
Don_Lightfoot Aug 11th, 04, 5:43 PM Could the second digit be a '7' instead of a '1'?
It appears you actually have a Beaumont as their VIN's began with 6. I would go to the website for Canadian Classic Chevelles and Beaumonts for some explanations. I'll try to post a link in a minute.
Don_Lightfoot Aug 11th, 04, 5:46 PM Unless comebody can jump in here with specifics you can go here (http://cdnclassics.chevelles.net/resources.html) and input your number for them to decipher. Good luck.
E34M5 Aug 11th, 04, 5:57 PM Thanks for the help!
I'm checking with the canadians, maybe they can help me...
BTW : The second digit is "1" NOT "7"
Thanks again :)

On the canadian website I found that "13617" is the code for Malibu 8 cyl Two door hardtop
Check : http://cdnclassics.chevelles.net/canmodel.htm#66
Don_Lightfoot Aug 11th, 04, 8:14 PM You've got me totally confused now. Does the serial number start with 13617 or 613617?
I believe an Oshawa built 66 Malibu 2 door hardtop V8 would have a serial number of 136176-1-XXXXXX. The middle number '1' represents Oshawa Assembly Plant.
Any chance you can post a picture of the VIN tag from the car?
E34M5 Aug 12th, 04, 5:20 AM It starts with a "6".
I'm on my way out the door, going on a fishing trip for 10 days, I will take a picture an post it when I'm back.
Thanks!
DaleM Aug 12th, 04, 7:39 AM The 65 and 66 VIN tags do start with the year. So your 613617000752 is correct with the leading '6' being for 1966, 13617 is a Malibu V8 2-dr sport coupe and 000752 being the sequence production number. See my ChevelleStuff site (http://www.chevellestuff.com/) for more.

Don_Lightfoot Aug 12th, 04, 10:30 AM Thanks for clarifying Dale.
supersport6667 Aug 16th, 04, 10:34 PM It is made in canada the 6 if the the model year. The vin tag shold say made in canada or the like on it. The 0 I belive is for the plant identification they used a 0 or a 1 for either of the 2 plants. The opening page here on team chevelle has how to decode a canadian car. I have a 66 396 malibu SS made in canada.
