Hi Guys. I'm in the process of swapping a MPFI 350 from a Tahoe and a 700r4 transmission into my 68. I've got everything in and I'm trying to get the cross member moved back to support the 700r4. However, I am getting problems with the exhaust fitting now. The passenger side will not line up with the header; it is off by about a half inch too low. Am I using the wrong mounting point on the transmission? Should I be using the one on the tailshaft housing? Right now I'm trying to mount to the one that is on the transmission case because it makes the engine sit "right" in the engine bay. If I use the one on the tailshaft then the trans and engine lean back and I can't really even get my hand between the firewall and the back of the valve covers. Is there something I'm missing?

Most 700R4's never even had the extension housing with a mount pad on it. If memory serves me correctly, I remember only seeing that setup in the big Caprices. So I would say that you are using the right mount pad on the transmission case. On my 66, I made my mounting pad on the crossmember longer by about 2" and moved the crossmember even further back, It just seemed to let everything have just the right clearance. I am running stock manifolds, and had my exhaust system ran after the fabrication of the drivetrain.

I'm using long tubes and 2.5in exhaust, both unknown brands. Everything lined up fine on the 350 that was in there before with a 350 trans. I don't really want to spend the money on an aftermarket cross member. Thanks for confirming the mounting location.

Ok. Nothing lines up still. I've tried moving that crossmember all over the place and the exhaust is off by a half inch no matter what. Any suggestions? Should I just get a new cross member? If so, where?

I've never heard of any company making aftermarket crossmembers for a Chevelle. Exactly where are your clearance issues? I assume it is further back then the ends of the headers. You are probably going to have to just install the trans, then take the car to an exhaust shop, and have the exhaust modified to make it work. I had my exhaust ran after the fabrication of the drivetrain.

Here (http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/catalog.php?Action=GETSUBCAT&CATID=YA1A3) is one place.
I'm in the middle of putting a 200-4r in my 66 conv and used their crossmember. It fit nice. They seem to have them for the 700 too. No idea if it will help your exhaust fit problem though...

Well, I went ahead and ordered the Summit one. It seemed like the more sure thing to fit the exhaust thru than the BTO one. I'll repost on the quality and fit when I get it installed.

Well, the Summit one is in fact a Gforce one. It has the sticker across the center and everything. Best part is, it only cost $227 including the shipping. Gforce's website lists them at $259 plus shipping.
