Hey Guys,

I know these have been posted before, and I have looked thru all the information given, but I'm still at a complete loss trying to identify the rear-end in my car..

The thing is, this is NOT the stock rear-end for my car, I have a '69 Chevelle Malibu that was set up for Drag-Racing.. It HAD a Buick 10-bolt which the axles fried on and I had to replace it. I picked up this rear-end for $100 and it works great, but I really want to know the size so I can consider swapping gears.

The rear-end LOOKS like it might be the 7.5, it is not completely round on the bottom and has two small points, however they don't quite look like the pictures I've seen from decoding websites..

The codes and locations I've found on it are:

front passenger side axle tube: GCC 1442
lower front driver carrier casing: 3969277NF
on the back of the carrier I've also found:
lwr driver side: CON2
lwr passnger side: 65 J281

Aside from that about all I know is it is a 10-bolt, and the cover has has a bubble running up and down on the driver side of it (looking from the back)

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Looks like a 72 Chevelle 10 bolt.

GC=2.73 ratio 10 bolt non posi
C=Buffalo axle plant
144= day of year assembled
2=work shift

J281=Cast date Oct 28th '71

Edit:Probably a 8.2 gear rear. To verify
it will have 1 1/8 yoke pinion nut vs 1 1/4 for 8.5 rear
Ring bolts for 8.2 are 3/8 with 9/16 heads and 8.5 are 7/16 bolts with 3/4 head
