: 396 engine code questions

I just purchased a 396 motor that I have some questions regarding its origin. The block casting # is 3855961, and it says "Hi Perf Pass/Truck". The casting date is J225.

The block stamp reads T 1025EDH 113318 (which I believe to be the Vin # of the car it was originally installed in).

My guess is that this is a 1965 block, intended for use in a 1966 Chevelle, and that it would probably be a 396/325HP version, 2 bolt main.

The "EDH" code has me puzzled a bit, as there is a note in the SS restoration guide about some 396's being made into 427's, and this code is mentioned..

Can anyone shed any more light on this engine? Is it anything special?

Shouldn't the deck stamp also have a "6" and a single letter designating the assembly plant? I am thinking the last 8 digits of the VIN, not the last 6...

Picky but isn't it the number "1" (for Chevrolet) and then the last 8 characers (not digits) of the VIN; i.e., 1+(year digit)+(plant letter)+(VIN sequence digits) or was the leading "1" not added until later?

The DECK STAMP should read T1025EDH 6A113318

I used A for Atlanta as an example, it may be K for Kansas or B for BALTIMORE, etc etc...

Of course humans did the stamp and may have missed one/some of the stamps. To err is human, to forgive divine?
